The lost city of Yoh-Vombis, that Rex is reading about at the start, is a tribute to the story, The Vaults Of Yoh-Vombis, by Clark Ashton Smith.   Here is an audiobook of it.

Mr. Smith was another author inspired by Mr. Lovecraft.

Yeah, that is the mistake many make with Hannah.  Of course, they have no idea that she has this power.  And this isn't the first time she's used it to take down a bad guy (although she never kills them, she just knocks them out).

Yeah, which is good she doesn't kill them in panther form...that would be a sad and very reputation-destroying way to die. Imagine if all of your evil buddies heard that you were killed by an ex-warlock with the power to transmogrify into any cat she wants (and chooses a panther.)

Hannah (and Rex) usually don't kill, unless there is no other option on the table. 

With evil humans, however, it is easy to incapacitate them, without killing them, so there is no problem here.

Hannah's refusal to kill shows how far she's come since her Warlock days.

I hope when this summer starts that I can sit down and read some of Mr. Lovecraft's stories. So...I'll check that one out whenever I start.
