So we find out the cover for what happened to the sisters. Apparently, everyone things their house burned down, and they all perished. Of course, in this era of CSI, one might wonder why no remains were found, but I'm prepared to let that go. At least they came up with something.
Reminds me a bit of the new identities thing from the original show. However, the Budget Nuke of 2005 made that idea unworkable (so we had them living in the same house and having the same jobs).
This is not an issue here, as the sisters are now in a totally different part of the country. They are currently unemployed (although Maggie applies for a job at the end of the episode). The Vera's are gonna have a harder time than the Halliwell's ever did.
I liked the Mel and Maggie bits, when they talk about their deceased father. Maggie has this idolized version of him, when Mel sees him as he really was, a loser and a deadbeat, who constantly let them down. Loved the bit when Mel admitted that it was she that gave Maggie that music box. Shows how much she loves her sister and hated to see that no good excuse of a father hurt her.
Did I see sparks flying between Mel and that store owner.
Who is Harry's double. They say he's a shape shifter, but we never see him change his form.
I'm sure our British posters will smile at Harry's line about not being too keen on driving on the right side of the road
A new big bad is being introduced.
Again, we have a good episode without multiple plot lines bogging us down.

So there was a lot to love about this episode imo, we got to learn a lot more about the demon hierarchy, and that they’ve been at war with each other for a thousand years, and now there is a new overlord to unite them? Presumably the big evil for the season, shrouded in mystery, could it be the assassin? He did have enough power to contend with the charmed ones after all. The thing I loved the most about this episode was the duality of good and evil, (Macy looked great in her demon disguise btw), but that’s part of my point, the show leans into the grey area, the original always had something must be black or white, Macy is a bit of both, and she leans into whichever side she needs to at the time, and it works! Which leads me to my next point about the grey area, from what the demons were saying, they truly believe that witches are their oppressors, that they’ve done nothing wrong and that them killing the witches is payback for years of oppression, very interesting perspective! To the demons, the witches are the evil ones. When Macy tried to break the uncomfortable silence by turning on the radio and THAT song came on, it did make me giggle a bit. I liked that they didn’t just instantly get their powers back, Mel had to come up with a proper way to use magic to help them and save the day without just throwing up her hands and freezing the room, it was refreshing and creative and I want more of that. I liked that Harry didn’t keep the secret about the assassin looking like him for very long, I was worried that in typical CW fashion they would long this out for a long time, and instead it gets resolved pretty quickly, and that’s because he has a true friendship with the sisters, he isn’t their slave like a certain someone in the original used to be. I loved the story about the music box and their dad, Mel getting the box for Maggie because she couldn’t stand to see her sister in pain was a real sisterly moment, it warmed my heart a little. I’m not keen on relationship drama, BUT I will say the Macy/Harry inevitable romance actually felt a bit more natural this week? Was it just me? They seem to work well together and now that we’ve seen them having these more intimate conversations away from Maggie and Mel it does feel like they have more chemistry, no doubt down to the good acting but for the first time I can actually see it being a bit more plausible if they gradually, slowly continue to evolve it like they have been. A slow burn always works better imo. Speaking of relationships, I’m almost certain boxing guy will end up being Maggie’s new love interest, however so far I’m okay with it, he seems to have shown more personality in two episodes than Parker did in an entire season, so he has that going for him at least. I like how they explained away them just leaving Hilltowne by just killing them all off in a house fire, simple but effective and also explains how the house just vanishes – because it burnt to the ground! The blackboard at the end, where Macy wanted to write the names of the witches they’ve lost in remembrance was beautiful, it shows that these charmed ones really care about saving innocents and not just forgetting them, like Macy said, these aren’t just lights on a screen, they’re real people. I don’t know about anyone else but I think the new showrunners are knocking it out the park so far, good writing, good directing, creative use of magic, interesting romances and villains, if this continues then this season could end up miles better than the first.
And Tim you are definitely right, loved Harry's line about driving on the other side

I agree Adam the new producers seem to be doing rather well here making the witches care about innocents, the explanation about their house although someone's bound to find out the truth soon, Macy and Harry's potential slow burn relationship although I wouldn't want that happening, and Mel not replying on her powers and thinking with her brain something the original sisters didn't really do in the later seasons obviously.
Loved Macy's demon look. Very plausible in her gear, hair and makeup also unlike Phoebe in her dominatrix outfit originally.
I also liked the music box sentiment too which was a nice sisterly nod of course.
When speaking about dad Maggie reminded me of Phoebe from the first time her, Piper, and Prue met Victor season 1 then wanting to go to his funeral etc. And Mel reminded me of Prue who thought Victor was a deadbeat.
The one grip I had about the episode was Layla being burned when she should've about to have being hung but otherwise a solid episode here.

They need to run with this. Have the sisters investigate and find out that not all this is propaganda. Given what the Elders here were life, I could imagine that some of the stuff the demons were talking about really happened.
No 1950's black and white thinking here.
Indeed, Harry is treated like the true friend he is by the Vera sisters. Poor Leo could only dream about that as time when on.
Me too. That was one of the best parts, IMO.
The only problem I have with this is the lack of physical remains. That might raise a few questions.
Amen.

And if season 2 goes well the show needn't worry about not been renewed next year then.

Yeah, if more fans tune in, the ratings go up.
If they keep on this new track, I can see that happening.

It would be a real shame as just as its getting really good it gets the axe, though that does tend to happen, hopefully the cw will be more forgiving. I think they have a good shot of getting renewed sompley because so many other of their shows are ending this year - Arrow, Supernatural, Jane the Virgin I believe as well, so they might need to keep things on air.
It may be too soon to get my hopes up but I really hope this show goes on for at least five seasons, I think that's a great amount, and if at the end of the five years its still good and everyone wants to, then continue it, just don't drag it to its death kicking and screaming.
Fingers crossed for a third season though I know it'll be a good few months until we hear anything.

Me too.
At least the new showrunners addressed the problems of the last season. Now we don't have too many plot lines all happening at the same time.
And it seems that Parker has been jettisoned. Yay!

Yeah that is something I'm especially happy about, no offense to the actor I'm sure he's a nice guy but he really couldn't act very well, its like they cast the first pretty face that walked through the door, he just sounded bored the whole time.

Not to mention his whole storyline with Maggie was just a Phoebe/Cole knock-off. Phoebe/Cole was one of the worst storylines the original series did and only damaged both characters beyond all repair.
Thank the dead gods of Krypton that the new show runners have tossed this out.

Interesting episode.
I wonder if Harry's Doppelganger killed Ray. Most of the people online I'm reading from places think so. It felt so obvious he killed them in order to get the sisters to come out to the funeral, so he could find where they are.
Also, I didn't feel anything for Ray's death, sorry, we haven't even met the guy, and they just tossed him away without seeing him. But, know about know next to nothing about their family history. Only seen their mother, and heard about their dads, but that's it. Dying to unlock the mysteries of their ancestors, and meet their version of Melinda Warren, and I hope we get that.
We got to learn a lot more about the demon hierarchy, and that was okay. Still hoping Warlocks are introduced or are they the male witches in this series?
The relationship stuff is off to the side, and this felt more like Classic Charmed Season 1 to me, watching that in the Cafe re-watch, where they didn't let that take center stage. I'm hoping this continues.
We have that with Maggie and her new guy, but it is not forced and feels like an organic build-up. Please don't bring back Parker, just when these two get together.
I see what they are doing with Harry and Macy. Although, I'm not that into then being together, at least it isn't forced.
The command center/secret base might be the one thing I'm not that into. Feels a little too Power Rangers/DC for me, and they'll get caught or someone will find the location eventually. Rather they ditch that place eventually.

So far, this season has been way better than S1. The show now has a clear direction instead of a bunch of disjointed storylines, and there's been far more emphasis on the sisters' bond and helping innocents. No more bland love interests stealing the show, and the sisters not having their powers (besides Macy's demon powers) has meant them having to rely more on brains, spells, and potions to solve problems, which is good. They also don't have either the Book of Shadows or Elders/Whitelighters (besides a weakened Harry) to fall back on.
This is what the show should've always been from the start. Hopefully, the ratings can at least remain steady enough to get a third season.

Let it stay like Classic Charmed's first season with a balance, and more focus on sisters/innocents/main plot, and the love interests being the less focus. This feels better when they use their own brains, spells and potions to solve things. And with no Elders, nobody to answer to now. That worked so well in the first season when Phoebe kept doing research, and looking online for missing people on a couple of occasions. I just like it better, when they do not answer to someone, and need to do research. Please, oh, please let Parker stay gone, and not bring him back for a love triangle plot with Jordan, unless it is to have Maggie pick Jordan over Parker, then I'll be cheering. Hopefully it can remain steady in the ratings, as I doubt it will gain any new viewers and rise, bit hard being on Friday.
