Season 10 Episode 21: “Return Of The Scarecrow”
In the town of Winfield, Kansas, Missy Bender (Alexia Fast) leaves her apartment, heading to start her shift at the restaurant. However, just as she gets outside, she is grabbed from behind and chloroformed.
A few days later, at the bunker, Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) are surprised at the arrival of Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes) and Angela Page (Eliza Dushku), who tell the boys about Missy’s disappearance. Jody is now Missy’s emergency contact, and the restaurant had called her when Missy had failed to show up for work and repeated calls to her apartment went unanswered.
Angela then informs that boys that, through her FBI contacts, she had learned that Pa Bender had escaped during a prisoner transfer. She and Jody had concluded that Pa was the one that had abducted Missy and had possibly taken her back to the Bender farm, near Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Since the boys have already been there, perhaps they could help in getting Missy back. When Dean asks whether Donna Hanscum will be joining them this time, Jody tells him that Donna is currently involved in an unrelated case and cannot help at this time.
During the trip to Sioux Falls, Angela tells Dean about her time with Jody and the other Wayward Sisters and what she had learned (like the fact that Oz really exists). Dean tells her that it’s just the beginning.
Meanwhile, at the Bender farm, Missy is tied down to the bed in her old room. Pa Bender has been keeping her there, telling her that she will pay for betraying the family way. When Missy tells him that her friends will be coming for her, Pa just smiles and tells her that he hopes they do, as he has a surprise for them waiting. When Pa leaves the room, Missy resumes what she has been doing for the past couple of days, slowly working on her bonds to free herself.
When the Winchester boys, Jody, and Angela arrive at the Bender farm, they find Pa waiting out front for them. He informs the group that he knows why they are all there, to rescue the “traitor”.
Jody replies that is exactly why they are there, and maybe Pa should just give up now, and make it all easier for all of them.
Pa says that he has no intention of doing so and reveals that he has backup. Said backup is an animated scarecrow, holding a scythe.
Dean and Sam are astonished at this sight, for this is a Vanir, the same kind of being they had faced and defeated a decade earlier. However, what baffles them more is how Pa Bender could know of such things. Of course, Pa isn’t telling. Dean and Sam then give Jody and Angela a quick rundown of their original encounter with the Vanir and their battle with it.
At that point, Angela draws her gun and fires it at the scarecrow. Of course, the bullets have no effect on it. Dean tells Jody and Angela that he and Sam will hold off the Vanir, while the two women sneak into the house and try to find Missy.
Soon after, Jody and Angela break into the house through the back door and commence their search for Missy. However, they soon bump into her, as Missy has finally freed herself from her bonds. When Jody tells Missy about the scarecrow, Missy says that she possibly knows what it happening and perhaps a way to stop it.
Meanwhile, out front, Dean and Sam battle the Vanir as best they can, while Pa Bender eagerly looks on.
Back in the house, Missy has led Jody and Angela down to the basement, where they see a bunch of magical talismans. Angela then asks how the Bender’s had acquired such objects. Missy replies that, when she was a girl, a strange man, known only as “The Professor”, used to bring such objects to Pa Bender, from time to time, and told him to use them as he saw fit. That is all Missy knows.
Jody then spots one talisman with Scandinavian writing on it, and figures that this is a vital clue. She quickly grabs it and the three women head back outside.
The battle is still ongoing, when Jody, Angela, and Missy arrived on the scene. Jody holds up the talisman and commands the Vanir to stand down.
However, Pa Bender is having none of that, and orders it to continue killing. Seeing that it is no longer under Pa’s control, the Vanir turns and, before anyone can stop it, decapitates Pa.
Jody then destroys the talisman, sending the Vanir back where it came from. The scarecrow, now returned to its inanimate state, falls to the ground.
As the group compares notes, Jody brings up what Missy had told them about the Professor. When Angela asks about him, Dean assures that that the Professor had been dealt with, years ago, and would not be coming back. However, Sam then points out that the involvement of the Professor with the Bender family reveals that perhaps there was far more going on than any of them had realized. It seems that the Professor was preparing the Bender family to be foot soldiers in some terrible scheme that thankfully never happened.
Meanwhile, Missy is staring down at Pa’s body. When Jody asks if she is okay, Missy says that she is. This incident has only reminded her of how grateful she is to all of them (the Winchester boys and the Wayward Sisters) for getting her away from that messed up family of hers. Had they not done so, she might have ended up just like Pa.
As Jody and Angela drive Missy back to Winfield, Dean and Sam enter the Bender farmhouse, to remove the remaining magical items from the basement, that they will store at the bunker for safekeeping. Dean then tells Sam that they will now have to be even more vigilant, because who knows how many other such items the Professor had stashed away with willing followers. As the episode ends, Sam agrees.
