I haven't talked about this on the other board, but since this is a new one, I figure I might as well do it now. First of all, my poor Daisy died a few months ago. She was quite an old dog, and was in quite a bit of pain near the end, so we had her put down. She's in a better place now, hopefully. Secondly, a few months later, we adopted a boarder collie that had been abandoned and called him Merlin (guess who chose the name...). He's a sweet dog, very friendly, but doesn't get along at all with our cats, and we have no idea what to do. Maybe he's had some kind of history with cats, but we were told that he used to live with one, and that he got along with it. And lastly, we found an abandoned baby hamster on the wall outside our house: she was still her box, and looked like she had been recently bought, but then abandoned (probably by some kid in school who couldn't keep her). Anyway, that's all the update on my animals.

I'm so sorry to hear about your Daisy, Jennifer. Believe me, I know how it feels when you have to have a beloved pet put to sleep. it's horrible.
I'm sure Merlin will get used to the cats after a while. Sometimes an animal needs time to adjust.
You found an abandoned hamster. You don't find those very often.

Sounds like she was a present given to some kid who thought she would just be a fluffy little toy to play with and not a living creature that needed to be cared for. Pets like that should not be given to kids who can't responsibly take care of them.

If you're not prepared for the responsibility of owning a pet, don't own a pet.
Thankfully, Jennifer, you gave that hamster a home.

We just had my cat Sheba put down. Apparently she had cancer. She's been sick since last night, but she just vomited bile. She was ten years old, and my favorite pet. There was absolutely no warning sign, other than sudden weight loss. I feel completely empty.

I'm so sorry, Jennifer. I know how that feels, because that is what happened to my Trilly, back in 2012.
They really are family, aren't they, and losing them is horrible.

Yeah I'm really sorry about your pets also nimue and know what it feels like to put a pet down when they're ill.
My cat Ginger was 15 when she got ill. She wasn't eating and was peeing blood also.
The vet took x-rays which looked like there was something wrong inside her which would cost over £1,000 to fix being money we didn't have unfortunately or pet insurance so the decision was made to put Ginger down at the vets as we couldn't do it at home because it was too painful.
I wept buckets when Ginger went as we'd had her since she was a kitten but at least had pictures of her still plus memories also.

Well, I'm here to announce another death: Jerry, who was 13 years old, died last week. We had to put him down, because he couldn't walk anymore, couldn't move, couldn't do anything except eat. The vet is not sure what was wrong with him, except that he had a big tumour under his shoulder that was taking over everything... For weeks no one could figure out what it was. So that's another dog we've lost, a dog that had a very strong personality, and even in the end kept on fighting (as seen by his appetite- there was nothing wrong there). What makes it even worse is that my grandmother also passed away last week.

Jennifer, I am so sorry over the loss of Jerry. He sounded like a brave dog, who, as you said, kept on fighting.
And sorry about your grandmother too. Two such losses in so short a time, no one should have to endure that.

The down side of being a pet owner. You know that you're eventually gonna lose them this way.

So, we have a new pet: a cat. A student in my sister's school gave it to her as a present (which probably means that kid had a cat, who had kittens, and the parents have been giving the kittens away...). You don't give animals as presents, especially without telling the other person about it: animals are a big responsibility. Anyway, we've been looking around for a good home, but haven't found any, so we're keeping her. We're calling her Bastet Poor little thing, she's barely a month old... But seriously, our house is starting to look like a zoo, we've got so many animals! Two dogs, a turtle, a wounded magpie, and five cats!!
