This is truly an amazing book that examines the mysterious disappearance of three lighthouse keepers from the Eilean Mor lighthouse, in 1900. Even now, more than a century later, there is no solid answers. Oh there are theories out there, from the mundane (murder) to the crazy (aliens abducted them). However, the mystery remains.
A couple of chapters are given over to speculation as to what may have happened. One chapter does deal with the supernatural explanations that have cropped up, even though some of those explanations are WAY out there.
The author of this book looks at those explanations, before reaching his own conclusion. And this explanation has more or less been accepted. Of course, no one knows for sure, but this explanation is accepted based on the clues that were left behind.
However, it is very likely that this more than a century old mystery will never be solved, given the passage of more than a century and everyone involved now being long dead. Even mow, there are those that prefer to believe in a supernatural, or otherwise answer. Since there is no definitive answer (the aforementioned accepted explanation is based only on clues, not any actual witness testimony), the field is open to all kinds of explanations.
Part of the book is devoted to how a lighthouse was run back in those days. It was a pretty lonely life for the keepers. One could see how some of them wigged out.
Of course, lighthouse are all automated now (and are being phased out due to the advent of G.P.S) so that is no longer an issue. Still, this is a fascinating look at one of the most bizarre chapters in the history of lighthouse keeping.
