Supergirl's Melissa Benoist Announces Pregnancy — Will It Affect Season 6?

Supergirl star Melissa Benoist delivered some super news of her own on Wednesday: She is expecting her first child with husband Chris Wood.

The couple — who also worked together on Supergirl during Wood’s stint as Mon-El — made the announcement with a cheerful Instagram photo. “A non-canine child is coming to our family very soon!!!” Benoist wrote. “@christophrwood has always been an old dad by nature but now he’s going to be a real one!”

It’s not yet clear if Benoist’s pregnancy will affect production on Supergirl‘s current fifth season, which will conclude in the spring, or the previously announced Season 6.

With Superman and Lois starting production on S1 earlier, and with the upcoming potential writers strike. Supergirl Season 6, might go straight into production after concluding Season 5, to get as much episodes in the can before Melissa goes on maternity leave?

Benoist and Wood have been married since September 2019. Though Wood is no longer a regular cast member on Supergirl, he did recently return as Mon-El for the show’s 100th episode. Next up, he’ll star in ABC’s thirtysomething sequel, which has received a pilot order.

With Melissa's pregnancy, I can understand the show wanting to get as many season 6 episodes done before she gets too big unless they CGI hide her bump whilst filming of course.

In terms of whether Kara gets pregnant by someone to incorporate Mel's baby the writers like what they did with Clark and Lois would have to think of something being how Kryptonian's generally can't have children with non-Kryptonian's because their DNA's incompatible considering it was never explained in the Elseworld's crossover how Lois got pregnant then.

As for her pregnancy, I'm sure they'll find a way to deal with it.  Many shows have.

Maybe, they'll do what other Superman shows in the past have done, have Alex gain Kara's powers temporary, so Melissa can have a bit of time off. They did that in an episode of Lois and Clark and Smallville. That will really help, a short arc, where Alex gains her powers, and Kara has no powers, then Melissa will have less physical stuff to do, and they can keep Kara swearing long coats and use Hollywood magic, simply filming her, so you don't see her from the waist down.

Or even just starting production on S6 earlier, and or reducing the season slightly from 22 episodes to 18 episodes might help too.

Honestly, so many ways to work around it without resorting to making her character pregnant.

As I said, other shows have dealt  with this, it's not a big deal.
