A lot to some fans apparently especially die-hard comic book ones whilst other people have said why does a LBGT person need to play Kate when anyone can act straight or queer like how Neil Patrick Harris portrayed a straight guy on How I Met Your Mother despite been gay real life obviously.
Batwoman's creator and producers have always stated casting an LBGT actress made Kate's character more believable on-screen because the DC characters lesbian herself they thought.

Of course, it may be another reason. Ruby has not yet revealed why she's leaving.

If I had to try and pinpoint the real reasoning here. I think its her health.
Early on during filming she had quite a severe injury that could have left her paralysed, now even with a successful surgery fixing her up, these injuries don't just vanish, she is probbaly in quite a lot of pain a lot of the time, add to that the rigorus 16 hour days of filming for several months of the year plus her crossover appearances, some of which is stuntwork, or work in the Batwoman costume which probably isn't light, she was probably suffering a lot.
And being in that much physical distress can lead to mental and emotional distress as well.
You just have to look at Stephen Amell right now to see how burnt out doing 8 years of Arrow made him, the guy is physically, mentally exhausted. Ruby probably had a long think about her current injuries/issues, tried to think ahead to doing this for potentially another six seasons and her decision was pretty much made for her, health always comes first.

Could be, Adam.
Gonna miss her though, she was an excellent Batwoman.

From what I've read online people have said they'd prefer Kate was recast and not have someone else play Batwoman like Julia or another character that was introduced if they came in say Cassandra Cain or Barbara Gordon although they both were Batgirl and not Batwoman obviously.
They also added whoever plays Bruce's cousin now should look similar to Ruby so it was like Kate's never being away provided that person has the same chemistry onscreen as she did then.
Regardless of whoever plays Kate next if the show does recast the character then I'm sure the producers will make sure said actress was fully aware of what went on like they did Ruby so she can make the decision whether to accept the gruelling schedule, potential accidents, and long haul flights to Canda if they live in the USA so they didn't back out when things got tough because they knew about it all beforehand of course.

Guess they'll go with the idea of Kate getting injured and her face needing reconstructive surgery.

I hate to be mean, I completely understand that Ruby didn't like the long hours and living in Vancouver. But, like so many actors tend to leave CW shows all due to being based in Vancouver for so long.
But like give freaking credit to Jensen and Jared for doing this for 15 years, and they never complain once and have families and children based in Texas, and yet still commit. Yet, some folks can't handle it for so long.
I understand her reasons, but I hope Ruby can be a lesson for future actors, to know what they are getting into. They may as well cast a local Canadian actor in the title role, so they won't complain about being based in Vancouver.
Maybe if they didn't make 22 episodes and had it being like Legends with 15-18 episodes, maybe two or three less months of filming a season might help actors to not feel so stressed and overworked.

If she didn't like living in Vancouver, then why did she sign on to begin with? Surely this was explained to her.
Something funny is going on here, IMO.

It's weird to hear that, yet it's still her decision. I know the show ran here by amazon. No time yet to see.

Still she must have been told that taking the part would require her to stay in Vancouver for part of the year.
If she didn't want to do that, why did she accept the role?
