Talk about a regression.
I'm guessing this is the same Ferdinand and Isabella that sent Christopher Columbus our way.

Yeah, the same. Isabella was especially obsessed with getting rid of the Jews and Muslims since she was a religious fanatic. But she was actually more powerful than Ferdinand since Castile was a larger and more prosperous kingdom than Aragon, in addition she also kicked her brother off the throne since he was gay and his only daughter was actually fathered by his wife’s lover. Under the succession laws, that made her claim stronger since her kids were actually fathered by Ferdinand.

Makes one almost glad that most Royal Families don't have political power anymore.

That’s true, most European monarchies don’t do anything and are just figureheads. Spain actually became a very modern country after Franco kicked the bucket, they immediately legalized divorce, abortion and homosexuality and had gay marriage before the USA. I suppose the people were repressed for too long and wanted to cut loose.

Yeah, you have to wonder why there were suddenly fanatics on all sides. And well, we could see where this led to.

Nice that Spain got into the 20th fast. I suppose forty years of fascism will do that. Spain was a backwards country well into the 70s, poor and had lots of Spaniards emigrating to the rest of Europe or Latin America. I’ve seen pictures of rural Spain in the 60s where people were getting water from a well and riding donkeys with lots of barefoot kids, whereas in the UK the poor didn’t live like this. Then again to a Fascist, it doesn’t matter if people are poor as long as they’re obedient and behave🤬

The reason Franco lasted so long is because he smartly stayed out of World War II. Hitler tried to get him to enter on the side of the Axis (because Hitler wanted to send troops through Spain to attack Gibraltar), but Franco said no.
Of course, the only reason Franco won the civil war is because Nazi Germany helped him.

The one good thing Franco did, he didn’t get involved and let Jews fleeing the Nazis into the country. Tourism in the 60s opened up the country somewhat since Spaniards in beach towns were exposed to different people and lifestyles but the country areas were backward as hell, Spain really modernized after Franco died and people made up for lost time.

I'm not surprised, there are people who actually thought Franco was a good ruler and want Spain to remain a Fascist country:o Under Franco Spain was backwards and poor as hell, but everyone was pretty much white, Catholic and obedient so that's a good thing, sarc mode. Spain did see some economic improvement in the 60s with mass tourism, but only people who owned businesses in the coastal areas made money while a lot of the country were still dirt poor and emigrating to Latin America, same as their ancestors had done for hundreds of years. Although I'm a Catholic and pro-life personally, with all things being equal, I would rather live in a secular, pro-choice nation since such a nation is more likely to be functional, democratic and better off instead of a country run by religious people and dictators. I wonder if these people would like being poor, having no jobs, having their kids emigrate to Mexico, using a well for water and riding donkeys back in the 60s, because that's what rural Spain was like. But hey, everyone is Christian and obedient and white

The U.S. liked Franco, because he was anti-communist. The enemy of my enemy and all that.

Though Franco was a facist, yet he was somewhat clever to get the regime back to monarchy and then to democracy by King Juan Carlos.

I think that Franco understood that, once he died, his regime would die with him, and made preparations.
And he was right.

He got that right, at least the Spanish monarchy is like the English one since they don’t do much. And the future ruler might be a queen since Felipe IV and Queen Letizia only have girls, an Infanta instead of Infante 😊
