Now I know what a classic the Wizard of Oz was and the sequel in the 80s Return to Oz. But anybody here read the actual original series by L. Frank Baum which had 14 books total.
I'm surprised in over 100 years, they've never attempted to develop these books into films or a series by staying close to the books. Of course, the Wizard of Oz film was close to the first book but of course, it NEVER ends with it was all a dream, and Oz really happened.
I've read some of the books, as the original books passed down through my family, as my mother got it from her mother and so on. Pretty neat hey.

Sorry, Kyle, my knowledge of this series begins and ends with the 1939 movie.

That's okay Tim, so many don't know. But it had such a rich world, that it could have honestly been amazing if they made it into a series or a series of movies based on the book series.

The 1939 movie is probably what has saved this series from complete obscurity.
Mention the movie, and the person you mention it too will probably say they've heard of it. Mention the books and you'll probably get a blank stare.

When I think of Dorothy, I always picture Judy Garland.

Kyle, I do know of these books. I haven't read them all, but have read just the first three. But your right, they have such a big world, I am surprised that in over 100 years, they haven't attempted to do a series or even films based on these books apart from a loose adaption of the original novel.

Nice, so you have read a few.

I've read a couple of these when I was a teenager from my school library. They were great.
So random the Wizard of Oz so happens to be on television tonight. I might just watch it again for old times, seeing as this thread reminded me of it.

When one hears about the Wizard Of Oz, the movie probably comes to mind first.
I think it's because of this movie that the franchise is remembered.

Yeah, most people would know the film and sequel 'Return To Oz' more than the books unless they'd read any of course.

Return to Oz was not well received, because, compared to the 1939 film, it's so dark!

It certainly was Tim.
The Nome King would frighten any child I'm sure the first time they saw him.

Yeah, that was part of the problem.
People went into Return To Oz, expecting it to be bright and cheery, like the 1939 movie, and were blindsided by the dark story.
