I have artwork of them (Helen and Jake), too: Daria seems to resemble Helen more, while Quinn resembles Jake more. Daria's nearsightedness and Quinn's red hair both appear to be the result of recessive genes.

Which means it comes from an earlier generation.
Jake looks bummed!

He's always angry and stressed out, lol. (He even had a heart attack in one episode!) Both Morgendorffer parents are extreme workaholics and probably wouldn't win Parent of the Year rewards anytime soon. They've spoiled Quinn rotten, while on the flipside, they've been uncaring and neglectful towards Daria. Helen, in particular, sees her older daughter as a "disappointment" for not being a total social butterfly and prom queen.

So Helen won't be happy unless Daria becomes someone she clearly isn't.
Bad enough Daria gets riffed for this at school, but from her own mother!?

Loooooove this fanart I saw on an ancient fansite. I wasn't the only one who found S4-5 to be a continuity-breaking, OOC mess! So Helen won't be happy unless Daria becomes someone she clearly isn't.

I wish I was lying. Even worse is that the show clearly wanted us to side with Helen in the last two seasons.

Where is child protective services when you need them!?
I would never side with such a horrible person like Helen.

Now, it's time to talk about the Lane family. Buckle up, because there's going to be a lot of headcanoning. We rarely saw Jane and Trent's parents (Amanda and Vincent) on the show, as well as their three older siblings (Summer, Wind, Penny). They only appeared in one episode from S3, "Lane Miserables," and we know little about their backgrounds. This old fanpage gives a good rundown of Trent and Jane's family. And, with this discussion comes the elephant in the room of Jane and Trent's ethnicity. They don't look white, nor does their dad. But, their mom and older siblings do. Daria fans have long debated over whether or not the Lanes are POC, and whether or not "Lane Miserables" disproved it. The show never said anything, one way or another, so it's up to the individual to decide what their ethnic background is. So, here's my own hot take -- They're Armenian. In terms of appearance, it really makes sense: Most Armenians have dark hair/olive skin and look Middle Eastern (Vincent, Trent, Jane), but some of them look more "white" and have blonde hair/blue eyes/light skin (Amanda). That still doesn't make them white, though, only white-passing. (Remember that Armenia is in ASIA. Anyone who isn't an ethnic European isn't white!) You also can't ignore the long noses, prominent cheekbones, and thick eyebrows the Lanes all have, which are physical features commonly associated with Armenians and other MENA people. And, being Armenian would also explain how the Lanes could be Middle Eastern, yet have Anglicized names. Due to a history of fleeing genocide and escaping ethnic persecution, many Armenian immigrants took on Anglicized names to help themselves assimilate better. And, since Armenians are mostly Christian, it would (of course) also explain why the Lanes aren't Muslims. Furthermore, it would also explain why the Lanes' ethnic background never came up on the show. Armenians are mostly an invisible minority in the US (proportionally smaller diaspora compared to Europe), and anti-Middle Eastern racism, in general, was less common before 9/11. The show never proved or disproved it, so as I said, fans can interpret the Lanes' ethnicity in many ways. And, I say that they are Armenian Middle Eastern POC.

Works for me.
I mean if the show never said, then fans are free to fill in the blanks themselves.

Exactly. This is, admittedly, one reason why I hate the Jodie reboot. MTV thinks they're doing a service for "diversity" by shoving Jodie to the forefront (and in turn, minimizing the Lane siblings). Yet, in doing so, they're whitewashing and Jane and Trent and refusing to consider the possibility that POC representation is already right there in the main cast. MENA people barely have any positive representation in movies & TV, and this go doubly for MENA minorities like Armenians (who literally have no pop culture representation besides the KarTRASHian creatures). It would mean a lot to many people to see Jane and Trent be acknowledged as Middle Eastern. Jane would be a portrayal of a MENA woman who is strong, independent, and not sexualized, while Trent would be a portrayal of a MENA man who is gentle, caring, and artistic, defying tired old stereotypes about MENA people.I get that #BLM and anti-black racism is the hot topic of the moment, and black representation is important. But, no POC representation should ever come at the expense of other POC representation.

That was a great link, I've seen those stereotypes in a lot of films, especially the dumb action films my brothers like. The sheikh stereotype shows up in a lot of romance novels and I can't stand to read them, the few I've read are eye-rollingly bad and full of cliches. I only saw Aladdin as a kid and didn't watch the remake so I had no idea that it might have been racist, I just thought Jasmine was pretty. If Trent and Jane are Armenian, it would be interesting since outside of the Kardashians and Cher there isn't much Armenian representation in popular culture.

If Trent and Jane are Armenian, it would be interesting since outside of the Kardashians and Cher there isn't much Armenian representation in popular culture. Quoted for truth. It's sad how little people seem to care about MENA representation. Aladdin was nothing but a mess of outdated stereotypes, and the remake didn't even bother to cast a MENA actor as Jasmine. (Also, did you know that the largest Armenian community in the US lives right next door to Hollywood? Yet, where are they in TV and movies? ) MENA people sometimes get token nods under the guise of "Muslim representation," but the majority of MENA Americans are Arab and Armenian Christians (along with a notable number of Persian Jews). Due to the way Islam has been racialized, these groups are still impacted by Islamophobic racism, but when even well-meaning people use "Muslim" as a synonym for "Middle Eastern," they're dismissing and erasing the majority of MENA Americans (especially when so many of them came here fleeing oppression and genocide in Muslim-majority countries). Also, there is a very dark, toxic, and racist history surrounding popular depictions of romances between white women and MENA men (ie. the "sheikh stereotype" you mentioned). Depict Trent as Armenian, and the Daria/Trent pairing takes on new meaning as an interracial pairing that defies tired old racist tropes. This Jodie thing needs to DIE! I mean don't those in charge of MTV ever watch CNN or read the news? Unfortunately, I think it's more like they watched the news, saw #BLM everywhere, and decided it was time to dig The Jodie Show out of File 13 in the name of being "woke." Painfully transparent.

Loved the articles, Betty. I barely remember Aladdin when I saw it as a kid but the article made me realize that Jasmine was actually sexualized as a stereotypical harem girl and that her scene with Jafar might have been inappropriate for a kid's movie. I work in Bayonne and go to college in Jersey City which both have large communities of Egyptian Americans, many of whom are Copts or other Christians. So I'm sort of familiar with Arab Christians and know that many Arabs are Christians.
The sheik article was interesting, there's loads of sheikh romances on Amazon Kindle. The few I've read were terrible crap and full of all sorts of stereotypes, I find them unreadable. I've seen The Sheikh with Valentino and read the source novel, the book is a lot worse than the film. A white Englishwoman is kidnapped by a sheikh during a raid and he rapes her repeatedly until she's a meek creature who "falls" for him out of shock and stays with him. Of course the rape is implied and one has to read between the lines but it's there, it's horrifying people thought this was romantic but unfortunately some romance novels are still like that.

Putting a show on, just because of the current political climate, is a bad idea.
I can tell you, it will flop big time.

I work in Bayonne and go to college in Jersey City which both have large communities of Egyptian Americans, many of whom are Copts or other Christians. So I'm sort of familiar with Arab Christians and know that many Arabs are Christians. Hollywood seems to have two modes for MENA women -- helpless victim in a burqa and hypersexual belly dancer. Says a lot that the most famous Middle Eastern woman in the US (Kimmy K) is best known for a sex tape and looking like a living Barbie doll due to excessive plastic surgery. Literally a RL version of Jasmine. The sheik article was interesting, there's loads of sheikh romances on Amazon Kindle. Those stories are all based on the same awful racist idea about MENA men -- they are violent, sexually rabid animals who kidnap and rape "pure" white women (and force them into their evil/oppressive culture). I can't believe people still read and write that nonsense.
