Very cool weren't they. They have great chemistry David and Gillian off camera too.

Indeed they do.
The picked the right people for their leads.

They were the heart and soul of the show, no them, and the show won't survive.

That's probably why the last two seasons, when David left, weren't as well received.

Yeah, that is probably why.

The new cast were okay, but they could never stack up to David and Gillian.

When you have a good thing going then replace that with something new sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't depending on the particular type of show.

Losing either David or Gillian was bad. We all saw that.

We did. I didn't mind Doggett and Reyes, in their own right, they would be fantastic supporting characters like Skinner I just didn't need them to lead, and that is what was going to happen in S10 when Gillian was not going to sign on for S10, but David and Gillian were the magic in the show.
I might be one who loved Doggett and Reyes in S8 and S9, they did breath new life in the show, we just needed to let them be supporting characters like Skinner.

I liked them as characters, they were not the problem with 8 & 10, it was removing Mulder completely in season 9. If they kept the core heart of the show, and just let John and Monica come on as new supporting characters to breath new life into the show, it would be fine. It was nice that Scully finally got a female friend after so long, and I liked her relationship with Reyes.

But getting rid of the true trio was where it went wrong (with Mulder in S9, I liked S8 when Mulder came back, and we had our own little group, but then Mulder left again)

X-Files without Mulder and Scully would be like Classic Trek without Kirk and Spock. It's just not on.
