The DC superhero drama Legends of Tomorrow is paying homage to the Kubrick film Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. This character will come as part of Legends of Tomorrow Season 6, which will premiere on the CW sometime in the summer of 2021. The upcoming season of Legends of Tomorrow was initially scheduled to release earlier. Still, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the cast and crew were only able to begin production a few weeks ago. Now, details about the new characters for this season are finally being revealed.
Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 film Dr. Strangelove was a highly-praised political satire at the time of its release and has remained a classic to this day. The story makes fun of the Cold War conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union, pointing out the ridiculous situations resulting from nuclear war. The film features a character named General Buck Turgidson, an American working at the Pentagon preparing for nuclear war.
According to TVLine, Legends of Tomorrow Season 6 has cast actor Nic Bishop in a role very similar to that of General Buck Turgidson in Dr. Strangelove. Bishop’s character, named General Kilgore, will be featured in the season’s fourth episode, titled “Bay of Squids.” In this episode, the show’s heroes will have to sneak into the White House and stop General Kilgore from starting WWIII. And of course, because this is Legends of Tomorrow, some alien shenanigans will be involved.
While some villains for Legends of Tomorrow Season 6 have already been announced, Nic Bishop’s General Kilgore is a new addition to its lineup. The actor has previously appeared on the ABC medical drama Body of Proof, where he played a former police officer turned legal investigator. Given Bishop’s past acting experience, this new character on Legends of Tomorrow feels like a logical step in his acting career.
The decision to pay homage to Dr. Strangelove is a unique one for Legends of Tomorrow, but it gives some insight into the primary focus of Season 6. Legends of Tomorrow Season 5 ended on a massive cliffhanger, and fans have been speculating as to what might happen in future episodes - and when. Given the Dr. Strangelove reference, the heroes may spend the season time traveling to different points during the Cold War, preventing nuclear conflicts along the way. Until Legends of Tomorrow Season 6 premieres next summer, presumably with a Cold War-inspired storyline.
