Really good episode!!
It has a serious look to it and I like it. I thought they would go with the comedy root, I am glad they didn’t. It was obvious Jordan would be the one with powers. But actually both of them should, since they ARE half kryptonian.
How is that possible that Clark can fly into space but they made Kara not be able to?
I do hope they uses Crisis to rectify that in Supergirl. Speaking of hope, I was also waiting for at least a mention of her in the show. Maybe later.
This shows seems to be running on a different reality...like they speaking that only Superman is the hero of Earth. Which is kind of weird. I also wonder, does he remember the period before Crisis?
It was a great premiere. They definitely have better CGI than Supergirl
Loved the wink to Action comic 1938 exactly like the cover.

Superman and Lois Pilot
Here we are. The 90 minute pilot of Superman (2 hours with the special after). I love that it is longer than a standard 42 minute opening. I haven't seen that for an American pilot in so long.
I also watched the after show and behind the scenes special. I loved the theme of hope, decency, and kindness they are using in the show. It is SO Superman, and as they said, timely. I imagine a lot of us could use that about now in the world right now.
I loved that it appears to be NOT following the same playbook as other Arrowverse/DC-CW shows. Taking the franchise in a bold and mature direction, free from the shackles of the conventions you would expect from a superhero drama.
The special effects and cinematography were from the movies good. I heard DC invested so much into this. As it's shot with movie film not standard television film. Investing more money into the early stages to get people hooked is always a possibility, so I'll reserve judgment on that until there are more episodes behind us, as it might just be for a bit.
I loved the opening teaser giving us a look at the history with flashbacks. Filled with a tone of Easter eggs, paying homage to the 40s Cartoon (Superman's first costume is directly from that). I loved that they recreated the Action Comics 1938 cover right down to the green car. I loved that they paid homage to the 1978 Superman in the flashbacks.
Clark and Lois first meeting was so perfect and everything I wanted in their first meeting in flashbacks. “Stick with Lane, she’ll show you the ropes.” It’s always been a tradition in Superman lore that Lois is the more experienced (and far better) reporter than Clark. But Clark’s first day on the job being paired up with Lois to show him around is a nod to the 1978 film. And I was thinking of the 1978 film watching that flashback scene.
When we see an early appearance of Superman in action for the first time in flashbacks. His suit (especially the emblem) looks like the version from the Max Fleischer 40s cartoons. It’s a nice nod to the early media days of the character.
It felt like they were setting a clear tone for itself right off the bat, one that borrows loosely from the Christopher Reeve era but mixed with the sorta down-to-earth feel of early Smallville and the humour of The Flash.
This version of Lana wasn't all that impressive. Maybe it's because the expectation is that they will grow closer at some point. So she STILL has no clue Clark is Superman. WHAT??
THANK Y0U SHOW! No annoying back-up team that all DC-CW shows have these days. Just Clark's father-in-law/Lois' Dad, General Sam Lane. I liked the way this episode positions General Lane as a personal and professional ally for Clark, who nevertheless still has some concerns about who his daughter chose to marry, with Clark as Superman being more important to the world than raising a family being second.
It helps that Lois and Clark are themselves established veterans, and are long past the usual romantic and professional struggles. So no love triangles, Lois not knowing the secret stories.
What actually upset me was the death of Martha Kent. But this is SO TYPICAL of a CW show. I just wished they let viewers have a chance to feel for her before she died, and they kept her around a little bit. Clark at his mother’s deathbed mirrors a scene from the comics, where young Clark speaks to his father as he dies.
Superman III isn’t most peoples favorite Superman movie, but there are elements of it that are in the pilot. When Clark returns to Smallville and reconnects with Lana Lang and seeing how things changed. That’s a big deal here, although unlike in that film, Lana and Clark don’t appear to have ever fully lost touch. But also in that film, Lana is romantically involved with a local, and while Kyle Cushing is something of a rude/pricky character here, he’s far better than the alcoholic former Smallville High quarterback Brad Wilson from Superman III. But I still dislike him and I'm sure he is jealous of Clark upon his return to Smallville. In the comics, Pete Ross married Lana. Personally wished they went that direction. Also Lana's oldest daughter does not look like a teen at all, and was kind of boring.
Storing the old ship in the barn is nothing new, but it had particular significance in Superman: The Movie. I can't remember if a teenage Clark in that film had ever fully understood or embraced his heritage until the ship “calls” to him one night and he pulls one of those strange crystals from it. But here they had Jordan do that, when he and his brother find the ship locked in the underneath the barn.
“The sunstone crystal” that Jordan pulls out of the rocket is very much exactly or similar to the crystals that were in the rocket that brought Kal-El to Earth in the 78 Film. It was only recently that they were adopted in the comics and that’s where they were finally named, as well. (If anyone didn't know that, especially if you are an old comic reader)
Young Jon Kent is a new addition to Superman lore in the comics for a decade now. There, he’s an only child, not a twin. After being a young kid for most of his time in the comics, he was recently aged up to a teenager (thanks to some space travel). He is, of course, named after Clark’s adopted father Jonathan. Jordan is a new creation for the show and has no comics counterpart. Clark and Lois' sons both are 14 year old fraternal twins. One is a loner with a social anxiety disorder and the other is a star athlete. I know in the comics Jon is their only son with powers, and here, The Jordan reveal is supposed to play as a twist who first experiences powers (I kind of expected the one who had a rough relationship with Clark and a loner to be the one to experience his powers first or have them). I do wonder if they are truly going to direction of one son has powers and the others doesn't. I suspect both develop at different times an the other develops powers later. I wonder how long until one of them becomes Superboy.
As for Lois, I love this version of Lois. She barely got enough material when she appeared elsewhere in the crossovers, but every single part of her journey was great in the premiere, and I can't wait to see how she progresses. Investigating Morgan Edge, and digging dirt on him now that he bought the Daily Planet will be fun.
Loved the scene with Clark and Jordan gave Clark gave him some fatherly advice that he'll be there for him to help him with his powers. It's sad that Martha's death was what convinced Clark and Lois to move the family to Smallville to raise their sons, but perhaps this was easier for the show with COVID, than filming in a big city. I guess it's perfect for their sons to grow and control their powers, like Clark did growing up as a teenager. I just hope we still see Metropolis.
This new villain The Stranger or Captain Luthor. He is so Lex from another earth (as was seen in the massive DC Crisis comics event in the 80s). I do hope Jon Cryer will come on as regular Lex at some point.
We ended in a cliffhanger. Personally wished it ended with Clark and his sons (as Walker does every episode so far ending with the family). But that is how television is, every episode has to be a cliffhanger.
Thoughts on Lois and Clark:
Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch were great as Clark and Lois. Having arguments about real-world issues and how they will adapt to be better parents. Lois has the core that makes her such a great reporter but also a real sweetness, and Clark is lovable and his dorky charming while also being noble and strong. They have so much warmth in their scenes, they really do feel like they are a couple that have been together for years.
Odds and Ends: *No a single trace or mention of Supergirl. Interesting, but I'm sure she'll be namedropped soon enough in later episodes, unless since I heard rumours this show is set after S6 of Supergirl and the series. They can't leak the fates of said characters on her show, unless she's dead/off planet. *Clark lifting the truck just like in Superman: The Movie 1978. *Clark’s joke to his kids that he was the “team manager” for the football team is something of a callback to the Superman 1978 Movie, as well, because in one of the only scenes with a teenage Clark in that film, he was in charge of keeping the football team’s equipment in order. *The Shuster Mines are named after Co-Creator Joe Shuster. Cool Easter Egg. I believe (and my cousin who is older than me by a decade, and watched the pilot, pointed out to me that on the Superboy series from the ’80s, Clark and Lana attended Shuster University, as well.) *The characters of Morgan Edge and Samuel Lane both previously appeared on Supergirl, but are recast for this series, which you can write off as being part of the “Crisis On Infinite Earths” universe reset (famous comic event in the 80s). *In terms of casting and characters, I’m guessing that Clark is supposed to be in his late 30s/early 40s. So Lana’s joke about how he doesn’t age is a way to lampshade the fact that Tyler Hoechlin is only 33. But it's a tradition in Superman film/television that the actress playing Lois is commonly older than the Superman/Clark actors. Margot Kidder, Teri Hatcher, Amy Adams and now Margot Kidder were/are all older than Christopher Reeve, Dean Cain, Henry Cavil and Christopher Reeve. So I suspect Lois is older than Clark here, as she has been before in comics and previous versions as one or two years older.
Overall thoughts: Superman & Lois is off to a good start, although a few things annoyed me mainly with Lana and her husband, but hopefully they grow on me. The chemistry of Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch was great. Doing so much better with the two characters and their romance in a way Supergirl never could (I guess it helps they have their own show).
The idea of Lois and Clark being parents also works well, both giving the series a clear hook. That it almost feels like a semi-sequel to Lois and Clark which ended with them with a baby.
Superman & Lois feels very divorced from the rest of the DC-CW shows, but that's just as likely to be a selling point which I like. Maybe the point, so people can jump into this show, without needing to see the others.
Grade: A
Top Three Moments:
1. Clark and Lois first meeting in the flashbacks making me think of the 1978 film. 2. “Cool costume.” “Thanks, my mom made it for me!” 3. Clark/Jordan starting to bond near the end of the episode.
Honorable mentions: *Every wink, nod or Easter Egg to the Superman movies or comics.

I feel like I don't have much to add, except that I absolutely loved it, the show is starting off great and I can't wait to see what happens next. The cast has great chemistry and the Captain Luthor storyline is intriguing, my guess is that he is from one of the earths that was destroyed pre-crisis by the anti-monitor similar to how Black Sirens Earth was destroyed as well, and he is a remnant of that, escaped to Earth-Prime and is using that suit and his ship to somehow not be erased.

I'm guessing they want this show to get established, before they start bringing in the Flash and others.

Silas you continue to be my favourite reviewer. With how you set it up and write. Like adzpower, I don't have much more to add. Since everybody covered what I loved. What a fantastic and brilliant pilot. Superman is back, and so excited for the next one. Superman and Lois Pilot

Taking the franchise in a bold and mature direction, free from the shackles of the conventions you would expect from a superhero drama. A MASSIVE WELCOME CHANGE. It deserves it. I jumped in excitement with those. Wasn't that so great. Very nice. It felt like they were setting a clear tone for itself right off the bat, one that borrows loosely from the Christopher Reeve era but mixed with the sorta down-to-earth feel of early Smallville and the humour of The Flash. She has no idea it seems. I'm shocked. Yeah, it was so fast. I didn't think it would be this soon. But, it's typical CW to off the Elders/adults right away. Maybe Pete Ross will show up later. Lana divorces Kyle. He's a real jerk. I don't think they did in the film. I forgot they finally gave the crystal a name in the comics. So cool! Perhaps Jonathan will develop powers later. I can't wait. I guessed another Earth Lex right away. He needs that suit to survive, or it will be Batwoman and the Beth's all over again. They were perfect in the part. Love those two. Yes lots of Easter Eggs I spotted, but you spotted more than me. Yeah, I think Lois is the age of Elizabeth Tulloch, 40. Clark is 1 year younger 39. Yeah. It was great, that it isn't a cut/paste of the others. And no Team working with Superman, that is what I was dreading. Me it's an A+ [/quote]Great moments.

Does Superman really need a team?
Loved the name of his sons. Jonathan for Jonathan Kent, his human foster father, and Jordan for Jor-El, his Kryptonian father.

Absolutely not. It's what has kinda bored me with Supergirl and her team on her show. I'm so glad Superman won't have that. It's really cool they named their kids that. I know Jonathan is canon to the comics as their son. Jordan being a nod to Jor-El is nice.

Although I haven't actually watched the pilot yet I did see someone on YouTube who does television show reactions react live to the premiere which I enjoyed plus I've seen clips of various scenes also though I will view the whole thing at some point either tomorrow or today.
From what I got off the live reaction and various clips I saw I agree with everyone else's comments here on what they thought of the pilot and so can't really add anything to what Silas did fantastically already mentioning everything I picked out from it.
I will say Lois and Clark being married and having teenage kids is something new people haven't seen on TV or film yet barring the Lois and Clark adventures of the '90s which had them get a baby in the final episode then. This might interest Superman fans seeing a live-action continuation of their story and not the an origin one we've seen before and the way they handle work, married and kid lives, etc obviously.
Also being it's own show Superman and Lois could do things differently taking directions from Superman films, Smallville, Lois and Clark, and the comics as inspiration which some people might like with Morgan Edge owning the Daily Planet and having established characters be with someone fans wouldn't expect them to like Oliver going with Lois and then Chloe in Smallville when everyone knows he normally ends up with Black Canary then.

Silas you continue to be my favourite reviewer. With how you set it up and write. Thanks. I also love giving out a grade, as a record for how I felt about episodes of the show. I noticed most here are doing the same grading the episodes. Be kinda fun to see how we all felt about each episode. Collectively the pilot averages an A right now. I didn't see the special. So glad they want to stick to that theme of hope, decency, and kindness. So not the message in Zach Snyders Superman. Absolutely. We so need that right now. I hope so. I don't think they did in the film. Yes, I noticed so many right away. Yeah, its a tradition that the actress cast as Lois tends to be older than the Clarks.

I love the show, but its gotten WAY too overcrowded with so many friends suiting up. It's taking all the attention away from the real star Supergirl. That's fine for Legends, but not Supergirl who is the strongest. Although I haven't actually watched the pilot yet I did see someone on YouTube who does television show reactions react live to the premiere which I enjoyed plus I've seen clips of various scenes also though I will view the whole thing at some point either tomorrow or today. They might want avoid having Chloe on. Because of the Allison Mack thing. I'd imagine so sadly. They did seem to set her up in Supergirl with her name drop. But Crisis will wave her away now an with the Mack stuff. Sucks, but sadly it's what is. Fanfics can keep her alive.
