I get the feeling that this episode was originally meant to be the S1 finale. The Algeaca storyline was wrapped up and a new menace seems to have been introduced.
When the latest scheme to defeat the Algeaca backfires, the Drew Crew is at their wits end. They start to bicker with each other, and Bess basically says that this is all on Nancy. That she's taken the rest of them down with her. Of course, Nancy storms out. However, they do realize that, if they are going to die, they should spend their last day on Earth meaningfully.
Loved the scene with George and her sisters. Seems that George is basically raising them.
Carson and Ryan try to play sleuth themselves, as they follow Nancy around. However, they're not very good at it, as she quickly spots them.
Nancy goes to see Hannah, who tells her that there is no other way. While there, Nancy reads about all the mystical items that are there, including a blanket that could restore the dead. This will prove to be a Chekhov's Gun later in the episode.
Nancy decided to have one last meal with Carson (since she thinks she's going to die). The two of them have a conversation about love, which Carson says that he loves Nancy, regardless of whether she's his biological daughter or not. It's this conversation that you see the light bulb go on over Nancy's head. She realizes that the Algeaca was once human and if they can reach the humanity still in here, they might have a chance.
So the Drew Crew gather at the claw and Nancy tells them her plan. When the Algeaca attacks, they read the letters that Odette, the woman the Algeaca once was, wrote to her lover (Odette was a gay woman living in a time when being gay was definitely not acceptable). After few tense moments, the plans works. The Algeaca reverts to her human form, Odette, before leaving.
However, during the initial attack, George was fatally wounded. Nancy heads off, grabs that magic blanket (the aforementioned Chekhov's Gun) and uses it to save George.
All is well, and the Drew Crew and alive and well.
However, it seems that, by using that blanket, Nancy has inadvertently unleashed other mysterious forces (as Hannah had warned her). As the episode ends, Nancy asks "What was that?"
Which is why I feel that this was supposed to be the S1 finale. It seemed like it.
