Alright, here's now the story. Just published it on FF.net too.
Hunting Secrets
Somewhere in Desolation WildernessCody was riding through a forest, lost in thoughts and all when suddenly he met two girls who were looking for autumn fruits on earth. “Hey”, he greeted smiling but they were just shocked to see him and gestured wildly with their arms. Cody was lost but then he noticed it. “Oh, I’m sorry,” he said and followed them to their camp.
Unnoticed an injured bear was close by and made some noise which caused Cody’s horse to get antsy and he pulled on it, trying to calm it down. The bear just followed them silently and no one noticed. Until they reached the camp where the others were and prepared their lunch.
The woman and man noticed that two of their girls brought someone with. Ed and Sue Ellen Sanders were just protective and hurried over. They introduced all other kids and themselves while using hand signals. “Hello, nice to meet you,” Ed said and gestured Cody to sit down, explaining all they would do here and could really Cody’s help.
“I’m not so sure,” Cody replied uncertain. “You may have the right intentions for them but in these mountains, one little mistake could take a life and more. Believe me, I’ve grown up here and known this all my life.”
“Don’t worry,” Sue Ellen cut in and got one of their kids to come over. “You see, we told them what to use if they’re in trouble. With lamps, mirrors and this bright orange scarf that we use to tell the others where we are and what’s happening at the moment. You see we’re very well prepared.”
“Okay,” Cody agreed reluctantly and sighed. “It could be helpful but for all this, they need a high point, to be seen and more. And as you can see that even the forests could be dark – and dangerous.”
Again the horses reacted nervously and all looked around to see where the danger was. The bear came in and stormed through the camp, causing everyone to go into different directions, fleeing. Before that, Cody had let the horses to go away. Ed was trying to get the bear away but the animal got him, and Cody helped the best way he could. Saying that this was a wounded bear who could be deadly when disturbed and the only thing they could do was wait. He’d call for help meanwhile and search for the missing kids.
After the bear was gone, Cody walked over to the radio and called for help. Taking a deep breath, he said, “Cody calling Flying Tiger or home. Cody calling Flying Tiger. Big brother, do you read me?”
“Yeah, Toad, I read you. What’s up?” came Matt’s voice over the radio, making Cody to roll his eyes.
“Are you still with Dad? A wounded bear was at a camp for deaf kids and their leader got hurt. Could you use your help here,” Cody replied seriously. “And quit calling me Toad!”
“Yeah, Toad,” Matt answered smiling. “Still at Dad’s place. Also Avila is with me. We can be quick by your place. And then you tell me what has happened. Or is it better to call all Rangers now?”
“Do as you like, big brother. You’re their boss. And thanks. See you soon. Cody out.” He put the radio down and went to his horse, collecting the kids who may have fled close by. He’d wait for his brother and father, and maybe all other Rangers.
During the flight with Avila and his Dad, Matt called his Rangers up to the place and asked them for his horse, loaded with a rifle and tranquilizers. And naturally, Hart asked why but Matt just said that he’d give him practice, leading the group in case something might happen to him. That earned him a strange look from his Dad, yet Matt chose to ignore it. With Cody saying that they were dealing with deaf kids brought up some memories of his college years which he nearly had forgotten. It was time to use these skills again.
Matt, Avila and Jesse were the first to arrive but it didn’t take long that his Rangers were at the camp as well, on horses with his own, packed with the requested items. Just his little brother was not seen but they had to take care of the wounded man first. Robin already treated him and decided to go down with him to Barton whereas the others would help searching. Only Izzy stayed at the base for further information and if something came up.
“Matt,” Tim began confused. “I know you told me to get practice here but why with this? I mean, you have the most experience here, along with your Dad and Cody. Why all of a sudden?”
Matt sighed. “I’m aware of this but as I said, you need practice. Thanks for bringing up Shadow. My Dad will help you, I’m sure. I’m going to find these girls. But therefore, I need to speak with Mrs. Sanders first. Excuse me.” He walked over to the woman and began talking to her with his hands.
Several jaws dropped shocked. But only Cutler found his voice again asking, “Did anyone know that Matt knew American Sign Language? I mean, he never told us. Jesse?” He turned to Matt’s Dad who looked shocked as well.
Just then Cody returned and brought the others to their little group. Walking over to the Rangers and his Dad, he saw them looking shocked at his brother and his way of talking with the group then. He also didn’t know what to say then. “What have I missed?” he just said stunned.
“Obviously some secrets your brother never thought to share,” Jesse replied and shook his head. Now he could understand why Matt wanted to do this in his own way. He’d help Hart and the Rangers.
Matt came over to the group and saw their shocked faces. He rolled his eyes. “Yes, I intend to have some secrets. Dad, would you help Tim and the others?” His father agreed nodding. “Thanks. Cody, I want you to stay here. It’s way too dangerous with a wounded bear.”
Naturally his little brother protested. “No way! You could use my help as well. Besides, you don’t know them. I do!”
“Cody, I spoke with Mrs. Sanders and she gave me all I need to know. I know how these people work and all. Let me do my job – on my own.” He mounted his horse, checked his requested items and rode away.
Turning to his father, Cody just asked. “What now? He could be in trouble as well. Does he have his rifle and the tranquilizers for the bear?” He turned to the Rangers. “Did you bring these with?”
Cutler nodded. “Yeah, we brought all with as requested.” He scratched his head. “Hard to say often how a Hawkes mind works.” That earned him some glares. “Sorry, but ain’t that the truth?”
“All right,” Jesse stated after some silence. “Let’s get started.” He turned to his younger son. “You still follow your brother. I can’t shake up a bad feeling.”
Cody sighed. “Fine, but I give him some time. In case there’s something else he’d need.” He decided to help his Dad and the Rangers meanwhile but soon he’d be up on Cooper and follow his brother.
Ranger StationIzzy was bored and just wished to be with the others. Obviously, he was the main man for manning the radio and answering the phone. Though with a wounded bear out there, hunters could be going there and distract the Rangers in their work. He could only wait for anyone or anything to happen.
Back in the Wilderness
Matt was on his way to the High Country, knowing the girls would need higher positions to be seen. He nearly had them but the night was coming closer. The Ranger decided to stay close by and find a shelter for the night.
Unseen, the girls had found some shelter behind some rocks close by and were sleeping. They were desperate and all but full of hope to be found soon.
Another Hawkes was on his way. Cody was stubborn as well and followed his brother. Both were good in tracking, and now it’d be best not to annoy his brother. Cody followed the tracks and was also close by. Like his brother, he decided to stay close by and find a shelter for the night. The brothers were close, yet far away.
The next morning, the girls woke up and started their way to water and a high place where they could be seen. When they reached the river and drank some water, the bear also appeared and hurried their way. Immediately, they searched for a high tower and found it an old wooden tower which they climbed up and waited for anything or anyone to happen.
Matt was close that he knew. He’d seen the girls briefly as they walked to an old wooden tower which wasn’t in the best shape. He hurried his horse to this place and saw exactly what he didn’t want to see. The girls on that tower! He gestured to them to stay on it but to be careful as well. He put his horse close by and let it go if needed and if the bear came. Walking closer, he noticed that one of the girls was close to falling down and their gestures were getting desperate. Seeing the bear, he simply prepared his rifle with the tranquilizers.
Then several things happened at once. Cody appeared and one girl broke through the wood on the tower. “Damn!” Matt cursed briefly and reacted, catching the girl with his strong arms and the bear came at him what caused Cody to call out a warning to his brother, yet the bear swiped Matt on the back, making him cry out in pain.
“Matt!” Cody cried out and instantly the bear turned to him. Getting afraid and stepping back, he noticed that Matt stumbled over to him. “Matt!” he said again, seeing the blood on Matt’s back and he closed his eyes afraid.
Matt did his best to reach his little brother and tackle him down, just before the bear came at him again. He gave his brother the rifle and just ordered him to shoot, full knowing that everything was prepared. “Cody …,” he simply said before losing consciousness.
Cody just nodded and finally took the rifle, shooting the bear and making him go down close to them. Thinking to have heard a faint shot and sighing in relief, he saw one of the girls coming down finally and helped her friend again before slowly walking over to him. “He’s okay, I guess,” he whispered, gesturing to his brother and reached for his radio, hidden in his jacket. “Cody calling Papa Bear or anyone! I need your help! Matt’s hurt!! Cody calling Papa Bear! Please,” he cried.
“Flash to Cody,” came Jim’s voice over the radio. “Cody, what happened and where are you? It’s going to be okay. Where’s Matt hurt?”
“His back mainly. Several deep gashes and he’s unconscious, doesn’t react. We’re close to the Old Fire Tower, at the Hunter Valley. Afraid to touch him, Jim. Don’t know what to do. Please hurry!” Cody said half in tears. Looking to the girls, he saw them crying too. “The two girls are safe. Matt saved them. Please, Jim!”
“We’re on our way, Cody. I promise and we’ll bring the chopper. Matt is strong, you know that. He just has a protective side. Cody, stay calm. It’s going to be okay.” Jim looked briefly to the others around him, especially Jesse. “Your Dad’s coming with us. We’ll be on our way.”
“Good, I’ll wait here,” Cody replied and noticed that the girls wanted to show him something. “I can’t go away. He’s my brother. What is it?” One walked over to the place and took their scarf from her neck, picking something up carefully. Coming back, she showed him a bullet casing – from a bullet, obviously. They had seen someone standing there shooting at Matt. Cody shook his head shocked. “No, no!” His tears became more and more.
Then a familiar noise came and the chopper with the Rangers and his Dad appeared. Some on horses, some in the chopper. Cody backed away afraid, still not touching his big brother but his Dad caught him, noticing his strange behavior. The younger boy only shook his head, yet gestured to the two girls who still held the bullet casing in her hand which Jesse noticed and became angry.
Robin immediately treated her boss carefully and asked for help from Cutler and Avila. Matt still didn’t react, even as they turned him around and laid him on the stretcher, with a heavy blanket under him. She and Avila flew to the Barton Memorial Hospital, including the two girls who were checked for sure.
Jesse came over to Hart. “The girls gave me this.” He showed him the bullet casing. Hart was shocked. “Yeah, Matt was shot while saving Cody and the girls. We need to find out who and how, yet before we should pay a visit to the hospital and the Sheriff.”
“Clearly,” Hart agreed nodding and waved Jim to them, letting him in the newest development. Hart knew that now his position as leader was required since Matt would be out for a longer while. As if he knew what was coming. “All right, Jesse, you should head to the hospital. Jim and I will check the area for tracks. Cody?” But Cody was gone. “Jesse, where did Cody go?”
Jesse shook his head. “I may have an idea and you’re right. You two check here while I find out how Matt’s doing at the moment. I’m more worried about him.”
The Rangers nodded and Jesse went on their horses to the hospital.
Tahoe, CasinoMeanwhile, Cody decided to flee – to his Mom, right to Tahoe in a casino where she worked. He just couldn’t face anyone of the Rangers and his Dad especially but his Mom would help him.
Jackie was confused as she saw her youngest son appear in the casino. He looked troubled for some reason. She asked for a colleague to take over for her while she caught Cody unaware. “Cody, baby, what’s happened? Why are you here?”
Cody only shook his head, not really feeling well and guilty. He was not ready to talk yet. So he let his Mom lead him to her house.
Barton Memorial HospitalJesse was pacing in the waiting room while the Robin and Avila had settled around him. The former Ranger couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong with his son. The bullet casing proved that, and Cody might have seen what had happened. But he was too shocked.
When a doctor came out finally, he immediately went to Jesse. “Mr. Hawkes, I’m Dr. Bishoff, watching over your son. We’ve treated the gashes on his back and they were very deep, so to speak. As we were told, the bear hit him twice. Never mind.” He took a deep breath. “While doing X-Ray, we also found a bullet in him, in his side. We removed it.” He gave the bullet in a clear bag to Avila. “Here, for the Sheriff. Matt obviously never noticed the shot as he was unconscious or losing blood fast. Hard to say. Still, the Sheriff should be notified.”
“Thanks, Doc. We are aware of the bullet since the two girls found an evidence for this, so the Rangers will go to the Sheriff whereas I’ll look for my family. Will Matt be okay?” he asked afraid. Jesse waited for an answer.
The doctor sighed. “I really can’t tell you how long it will take for Matt to return to his job. We’ve noticed a slight fever already but he’s lost a lot of blood too. He could fall into a coma or longer sleep for his body to recover. It’s really hard to say. We need to give him time, that’s all I can say. Be patient!”
Jesse nodded in thanks. “Thank you, Doctor. Would it be okay if Cody might stay with his brother? I’m sure he wants to since he feels guilty for some reason.”
“We’ll see what we can do.” Dr. Bishoff smiled suddenly. “Let me check on your son while you do what you want to. I take it you want to speak with Cody, to see what he saw.” Jesse nodded.” The Rangers will deal with the Sheriff and the other stuff.” He hurried back and was gone.
“Jesse,” Frank began and walked over to the man. “I’ll go back to the crime scene with the Sheriff and meet Jim and Tim there. Maybe we’ll find more. Robin will remain here and Izzy at the station. They can contact you at Jackie’s, I assume.” The older man nodded. “We’ll keep you up to date.” Avila went out with the clear bag and back to the crime scene with the Sheriff.
Jesse sighed and silently sent a prayer to Heaven, to make sure his boy survived this. Then he walked to his wife’s house, knowing that Cody would be there. Sometimes his sons were too similar without admitting it. It was time for a talk.
Jackie’s houseCody looked miserable but nothing Jackie did helped her baby who sat in a dark corner, crying and blaming himself. She wondered what had happened and as Jesse suddenly appeared, she immediately asked him. “Jesse, what’s going on?” she wanted to know quietly.
Jesse sighed. “Did he tell you what happened?” He looked over to his younger boy.
Jackie shook her head. “Not really. Cody remained silent the whole time. When I asked for Matt, he looked away. What’s going on, Jesse?”
Jesse sighed briefly and kissed his wife on her cheek. “Take a seat, please, Jackie. Close to the phone and listen to the story Cody has to tell.” Jackie nodded afraid but did as told while Jesse walked over to his younger boy.
Cody noticed his father coming over to him but he simply shook his head, not ready to talk. “Dad, I came here for a reason. Now leave me alone! I can’t face you, Matt or the Rangers. I let Matt get distracted and the bear got him again.” He laid his head on his arms and legs, crying.
Seeing the tears, Jesse began slowly and rubbed Cody’s arms. “Shsh, son, it’s okay. Matt knows his job and you are his number one priority.” He took a deep breath. “What I want to know now is if you had heard a shot during the attack? The doctor found a bullet in him but at the moment, Matt is still unconscious. Avila and Mike are on their way back to the crime scene, where they’ll meet up with Cutler and Hart. To see and find more evidence. Please, son, you need to tell us.”
Cody looked at his Dad with tears in his eyes. Putting his head now in his hands, he slowly started his story, “I saw Matt saving one of the girls who fell down off the Old Fire Tower. He caught her in his arms but the bear hit him on the back, making me cry out a warning. Both turned around, Matt and the bear, I mean, and both ran to me.” He took a breath, calming slowly. “All I remember is Matt tackling me down and giving me the rifle, telling me to shoot the bear which I did. Though I’m not so sure to have heard a faint shot but I was too focused on Matt and the bear. I don’t know, Dad.”
Jackie gasped shocked but decided to not say anything. No wonder Cody was upset.
“Okay, you may have heard it but the girls showing you the bullet casing proved it to be right. Did you maybe see who it was?” Jesse asked carefully. His son shook his head. “It’s okay, son. Matt will need you there.”
All were startled as the phone suddenly rang. Jackie grabbed to answer it. “Hawkes,” she said sighing. “Hey, Robin. What is it?” She let the woman speak and then replied, “We’re coming, don’t worry. All of us!” She put the phone down and turned to her husband and son. “That was Robin. Matt’s fever has risen and is calling for his little brother. You’re needed, Cody!”
Both men stood up and the Hawkes family was on their way to the hospital.
Barton Memorial Hospital The family ran into the hospital and stopped closely in front of Matt’s room where Robin waited for them. “Oh thank God! He’s delirious and calling for Cody the whole time. Could be a nightmare.”
“But this nightmare was real,” Cody said quietly and took a deep breath. “I should go. Matty needs me.” He walked into the room, followed by his parents and Robin. Immediately he was at his big brother’s side, taking his hand in his own and saying, “I’m here, Matt. You saved me and the girls. You’re my hero.”
Matt’s green eyes opened briefly and looked into the blue ones of his baby brother smiling. “You really okay? The girls too? Bear didn’t get you?” he asked quietly. His fever didn’t let him think clearly.
“Shsh, Matt, we all are safe, thanks to you,” Cody reassured him and went with his hand through Matt’s sweaty hair. “Shsh, I’m staying here with you. You can rest and sleep. I’m not going anywhere. Rest, Matty.” He sat down in a chair next to Matt’s bed and just stayed there.
Jesse and Jackie were glad that Cody could help Matt and noticed that Matt fell asleep again, yet still held onto his brother’s hand tightly. The parents took a seat next to the other side of the bed and just watched their boys.
Robin decided to step out and let Izzy know at first what was going on. Then she would let the others know about Matt’s condition. She so wanted to help them out there but for the time being, Robin would stay at the hospital. She just sighed.
Meanwhile back in the mountainsAvila and Sheriff McBride were back at the crime scene where they met up with Cutler and Hart. The Sheriff had spoken with the two girls and got a good description of the guy. It was familiar but he would wait here to see it confirmed. Yet he couldn’t tell that to the Rangers or Jesse, or there would be more blood, so to speak. They needed proof.
“All right, this is definitely the place where it happened,” Hart declared looking around. “I found blood coming from the tower to the scene where Cody stood. Frank said that the bullet was in Matt’s right side, meaning the shooter had to have stood over there.” He gestured to the right side of them.
Cutler slowly walked over to the place. “Yeah, someone was definitely here. The grass is down, and was waiting here. Yet it’s not sure was for the bear or Matt. I mean they could have been both at the same place at the same time.”
“Wait, Jim,” Avila cut in thinking. “Matt had to be quicker than the bear if he’d wanted to save Cody, so the shot was for him. Matt didn’t notice because he was too focused on saving Cody and the same goes for Cody the other way around. Plus, Matt was losing blood fast.”
“You’re right,” Jim agreed and Hart and McBride also nodded. Then all looked up as some footsteps could be heard. “Hide!” he quickly said and all looked for a good cover behind trees or bushes.
A man was coming through the woods, looking very nervously around and with a rifle in his hand. Seeing the blood on the grass, he was satisfied that he’d hurt the man who had done the same to him. Suddenly he was surrounded by the Sheriff and some Rangers. “Oh, waiting for me?” he said smugly, looking at them smiling.
“Roy Culhane? How are you back?” Hart asked confused and saw how McBride simply took the man into custody. Jim and Frank looked equally angrily at the man. “I don’t know how you did this but this time you’re going into jail for good! This is your second attempt of murder on Matt!”
“If we tell this Jesse or Cody, they’re going to freak out, especially Jesse,” Avila said calmly though he was anything but. His hands were in fists but Jim was calming him with his own hand.
“I’ll deal with it,” Hart said angrily. “You two go back to the station. Let Izzy know what’s going on. I’ll go to the hospital and speak with Jesse. Mike?”
“I’ll take him into jail,” Mike McBride confirmed and walked to his car, putting the man in and the rifle in a great evidence bag, naturally with gloves. “And you better find some good evidence to put him away for good. Tim, see you later, maybe.” He stepped into his car and drove back to his station in Tahoe.
Frank and Jim mounted back on their horses and rode back to the station, still angry, letting Izzy know what was going on. Yet all hoped their leader would be back soon. And Hart was on his way to the hospital.
Back at the hospitalHart reached the hospital and saw Robin sitting in front of Matt’s door. “Robin,” he greeted her and immediately she stood up. “We found out who did it. It’s best you’ll go back to the station. Frank and Jim will let you know. How is he?”
Robin nodded. “Obviously having calmed down when Cody came in and talked to him. The whole Hawkes family is in there. Matt is unconscious, I think.” She took a deep breath. “I’m going back to the station.” Looking back to the door, she slowly made her way out of the hospital and to the station.
Inside, Jesse and Jackie watched their boys quietly while Cody was sitting at Matt’s side, never leaving him and talking softly to him, letting him know he was here. Matt, however, was unconscious again but still held onto Cody’s hand. A knock on the door startled the parents and both turned around curiously. It was Hart who called Jesse out.
Jackie glanced at her watch. “Damn,” she said quietly. “I need to go, back to work.” She walked over to her boys, kissed them both on their heads. “Thanks, Cody, for coming to me once,” she said close to tears. “I’ll come as often as I can. Look after your brother. He did it for you when you were little.”
“I know,” Cody whispered back and his face was glued to his brother’s. “I just feel guilty and all, though I know I should not.” He sighed. “Thanks, Mom.” He remained where he was.
Jackie walked out of the room and saw Jesse and Tim talking quietly. Walking over, she said to them, “I need to go back to work. Come as often as I can, I promise. Be careful, Jess, and watch over the boys.” She kissed him briefly and finally walked out.
Jesse watched at Tim again. “So, did you find out who shot Matt? Did he return to the crime scene? Tim?”
Tim sighed and partly avoided to look at the older man. “Yeah, we found out and you’re not going to like it.” He took a deep breath and finally looked at the man. “It was Roy Culhane. We don’t know yet how he’s back but we intend to make sure he’s going back to prison for good. That’s a promise, Jesse.”
Jesse looked at the Ranger who was temporary leading them. “Tim, how the hell did he come back? We thought we’d managed this last time. Where is Roy now? With the Sheriff?”
“Yeah,” Tim agreed nodding. “Mike took him in. He gave us some work to do, though we could need Matt’s law knowledge now.” He sighed then. “We’ll get all done, I hope. See you later, Jesse.” He stopped briefly. “Do you need us to guard Matt and Cody?”
“No, I’ll speak with Mike about that. Do your job, Tim. Have faith in you and the others.” Jesse looked at the room where his sons were. “Yeah, it’d be good now but we can’t rely on that. Go now.” Tim finally went away and the father went back into the room. “Cody, I’m going to the Sheriff and speak with him.”
“Did the Rangers find out who it was?” he asked quietly and looked at his Dad curiously who nodded. “Who?”
“It was Roy Culhane.” Immediately Cody stood up, ready to punch someone. “Cody, calm down. Let me deal with him! I feel exactly the same way you do.” Jesse kissed him on his head and Matt on his forehead. “I want you to stay here, stay with Matt. All Rangers, the Sheriff and I will make sure that he never returns.” He looked briefly at his eldest boy and sighed. “His law knowledge would be really useful now but we’ll manage. I assure you that, Cody.”
Cody nodded and took a deep breath to calm himself. Then he took his seat at his brother’s side again, taking his hand into his and just waited for his brother to come back to him.
Jesse watched them both before finally going out and over to Mike’s office. He so wanted to punch Roy into his face and find out why he did this. Was it to hurt him or Matt again? One way to find out.
Sheriff’s officeMcBride was just disgusted of having Culhane back. He shook his head, not knowing what to say. Yet he knew for sure that an angry and more furious father was on his way. Mike just hoped that Cody was not coming with. This would not be good at all. “Are you happy?” he asked the man in the jail. “This was your second attempt of murder on Matt!”
Not a second later, Jesse came in and saw Roy smiling at Mike. “What did you say to him?” Mike just shrugged. “Fine. So, Roy, how come you’re back? Was it to kill Matt or Cody? Tell me, or just to hurt me? I know you’re still angry with me for washing you out.”
Roy now shrugged. “You’re the former cop, find it out yourself!” He looked directly at the older man. “There was a chance for me with killing both your sons!” Jesse’s hands connected with the jail. “Yeah, thought so but my anger is with you and Matt mainly. I saw all, you know but this was my last chance to hurt you the best way. By hurting your son again.”
Jesse growled loudly. “Bastard!” He took a deep breath. “Be glad I’m here, because if Cody were here to hear that, he’d have killed you right away. I feel the same, yet my instinct tells me to let you speak.” He walked closer to the jail. “And for your information. Nothing and no one comes between me and my boys!”
Mike decided to cut in. “Jesse, I’m going to use some old pulls of mine. To find out how he managed to come back here. After the last stunt. Don’t do anything you’d regret. It could hurt you more and especially your boys.”
Jesse nodded. “Thanks, Mike. I think I’m going out, needing some fresh air. Roy really gets me and it seems that he’s learned nothing.” The old man started to walk out without looking at the man in jail.
“Do that. I’m calling in some favors and join you then,” Mike said, giving the man a squeeze. “We’ll get him this time, Jesse. That’s a promise.” Mike noticed a strange look on the man’s face. “Jesse, anything else?”
“Outside,” the former Ranger said and finally walked out. Jesse just hoped, taking a deep breath, that Matt had woken up meanwhile but he knew the chance was slim. His best chance was Cody since his boys were really close. He just sighed and hoped for the best.
Back at the hospitalCody was getting desperate since his brother wouldn’t want to wake up. He felt guilty still, though he should not. He’d seen the bear’s attack on Matt, not once but twice, yet he’d only heard the faint shot in the distance. Shaking his head, he decided to concentrate on Matt.
“C’mon Matt, you have to wake up. You can’t leave me alone here,” he whispered crying. “Anyone will freak out, especially Dad.” He smiled at that thought. “Please, Matt, squeeze my hand if you can. I’m so sorry. Please, Matty!” The door opened and Dr. Bishoff came in. “Doctor?”
“It’s okay, Cody,” the doctor assured him. “Do whatever necessary to bring your brother back.”
The younger boy grinned suddenly. “Would it be also okay if I lay next to him on the bed?”
“Just as long as you don’t get on the tubes, wires and IVs, I see no problem but you need to step down when we’re changing the bandages and all,” Dr. Bishoff explained smiling. “Got it?”
“Sure, Doc, and thanks,” Cody replied and immediately was distracted by a soft squeeze and groan coming from the bed. “Matt? Matty? Can you hear me? Say something, please.”
“Cody? You okay?” the older brother asked quietly, not letting go of his brother’s hand.
“Yeah, I’m fine, thanks to you. I’m really sorry for distracting you while saving the girls.” Cody began to cry and noticed how his brother wiped them away with his hand.
“It’s okay, Toad. Just doing my job, you know. My favorite job in the world. Shsh, Toad,” Matt whispered before falling back asleep again.
Cody noticed that Dr. Bishoff had taken some vitals during their talk before slipping out as well. Now he just made his way onto the bed, needing to be close to his brother. Calling him Toad was a sign that his big brother would be back. He fell asleep as well.
Outside the Sheriff’s officeJesse was sitting on the steps, just thinking about the whole situation. Roy being back, Matt and Cody at the hospital and Matt being hurt so bad that it’d be a long time for him to recover. If he’d been there when they arrested Roy, well, it wouldn’t have ended well – and if he were to lose his son, no, he couldn’t think that way. Matt was strong.
McBride came out and took a seat next to him. “Sorry, took a bit longer than expected but I found out how he’s back.” He took a deep breath. “Found himself a good lawyer who petitioned to get him out every day, even with his criminal record. Well, it worked in the end.” He looked at the former Ranger. “Jesse, you okay?”
“Can’t really say that I am, Mike,” Jesse replied sadly. “I was this close to losing both my boys, and Matt is still not out of the woods. I can’t lose him, not now, not ever. Our family would break apart.” Tears began to run the man’s cheeks. “Sorry, Mike, never wanted to break down like this.”
“Hey, Jesse, it’s okay, we all understand your situation. You also have a right to cry once in a while. Matt is strong, you know that. And stubborn just like his old man. He’ll survive, you see. So what about evidence and laws against him?” Mike looked at the man again. “You could also call in a favor, you know.”
Jesse raised an eyebrow, not really happy about this suggestion. He’d rather forget this incident. “If you’re thinking about me calling Lisa Elliot, no way! She may like us and owe us, especially Matt, yet I wouldn’t do that.” He shook his head. “I need to do this on my own. For Matt, for anyone.”
McBride sighed. “Okay, but it won’t be easy. None of you has that knowledge, only Matt but he’s not available right now. Please, consider it, Jesse. She could give you the hints but the rest you can do on your own.” He stood up again. “I’ll need to go in and work on the details for getting Roy in again. Let me know your decision.”
Jesse sat there thinking and didn’t notice how the tears began to fall again and his horse came closer. It nudged at him and he looked up. “Hey, my friend. You know when I need you. So you think I should call Lisa for help, eh?” His horse just nodded. “You’re right. Would be best. And Matt will also be back on his feet soon.” He stood up and walked back into Mike’s office. “Hey Mike, I’m going to the Ranger Station and do some phone calls. You’ve got all under control?”
“Sure,” he said smiling. “Who convinced you?”
Jesse just smirked and waved his good bye. He mounted his horse and debated for a second if he went to his boys, checking on them but he knew Cody would yell if anything happened to Matt. He knew his boys needed this time for themselves. He sighed and rode to the Ranger station finally.
Back at the hospital Cody was sleeping as a nurse next to him woke him up. “What?” he asked sleepily.
“We need to change your brother’s bandages and it’d be best if you leave for this time,” the nurse told him smiling. “It won’t take long, I promise. And besides, you look like you need to eat anything.”
His stomach told the answer, making him blush a bit. “You could be right. How long?”
“An hour and a half, maybe. Go now!”
Cody nodded, yet was not happy but he knew it’d be a long road for his brother to recover. With a heavy heart he made his way to the cafeteria, ready to eat something and was met with Cutler and Avila. “Hey guys, how are you doing at the station?” he asked and ordered his meal. “Can you pay for me, please?” He gave them his best smile.
Jim and Frank rolled their eyes but agreed. “Sure, Cody. Anything for the boss’s little brother,” Frank said smiling. “How’s Matt doing? Anything anew?” The three of them walked to a table and sat down. “Cody?”
Cody looked at them while eating. “He was awake briefly, squeezing my hand and wiping my tears away.” He smiled a bit. “Was calling me Toad again.” He sighed. “I apologized for distracting him and all but he said it wasn’t my fault and that he was just doing his job. His favorite job in the world.”
The two Rangers smiled at each other. Jim spoke up now. “You know what I told you when you called us? Matt has a protective side and it shows especially around you but also us. He just wants to protect anyone. It’s in his nature, I think. Cody, it’ll be okay.”
Cody sighed but agreed nodding, knowing his brother all too well. “I should go back. You two back to the station?” They nodded. “Okay, let me know if you need help.” He stood up and was ready to walk away.
“Cody!” Frank’s voice stopped him. “You know your Dad, you should remain here, at Matt’s side. We’ll take care of anything else. So, stay here!”
The younger boy smiled and made his way back to his brother’s room but was afraid to walk in all of a sudden. The time had passed. A nurse noticed his hesitation and opened the door for him which made him turn to her and smile. Finally he walked in and took his usual place at his brother’s side. The nurse just smiled and closed the door for him.
Ranger Station As Jesse came in, all Rangers were busy reading. Only Jim and Frank were missing but they appeared some time after him. “Mr. Hawkes,” Izzy greeted the man sadly. “What an honor to have you here. Why are you here? We’re kind of busy.”
“Yeah, I can see that,” Jesse said smiling a bit. He turned to Cutler and Avila. “May I ask where you two were? I thought you all had a task here, with saving people from going into the snow and all.”
“Haha, very funny, Jesse,” Frank said grinning. “To our luck, we only had minor accidents, so Jim and I decided to see how Matt and Cody were doing. We talked to Cody at least. He still feels guilty for some reason, though Matt once was awake and they spoke.”
“Really?” Jesse asked excited. “That’s great. What did they talk about?”
“Nothing much,” Jim said sadly. “Matt was still way too tired and all but he wiped his brother’s tears away, saying that he was doing his favorite job in the world. Yeah, we all know that Matt has a very protective side in him.”
“That’s good, I think,” Jesse said, wiping his own tears away. “You don’t mind if I go into Matt’s office and call in a favor?”
“What do you mean?” asked Robin confused. She had been updated when she had returned to the station and she didn’t like this situation at all. She so wanted to be at Matt’s side but knew his brother would be better.
“Well,” the former Ranger began slowly. “Mike reminded me of Lisa Elliot since our source of law knowledge is in the hospital, unfortunately.” He sighed. “Lisa could give us the hints for the laws we need to get Roy Culhane away for good. And we do the rest. Matt doesn’t need to know, right?”
All Rangers smiled suddenly. “Sounds like a plan,” Izzy said and cheered up.
Jesse smiled a bit as well and made his way to Matt’s office whereas the Rangers continued their work in the station. Going in, he was reminded of how it was when he’d been in charge here and now his eldest boy was responsible. A good tradition and soon Cody would also follow. Sighing, he decided it was time to get to work. Sitting at the desk, he searched for the requested card and started dialing the number.
“Shapiro, Miller, Vanna and Elliot Law Offices. How may I direct your call?” came a friendly voice over the phone.
“Hi, my name’s Jesse Hawkes. I’d like to speak to Lisa Elliot, please. It’s kinda urgent,” he said nervously.
“I see. I try to put you through and see if she’s going to take your call, Sir.” The line went blank and Jesse could only wait and pray for a miracle. At least, he hoped so.
It didn’t take long before a familiar voice spoke, “Jesse Hawkes? What a surprise! Why did you decide to call me suddenly? Did anything happen to the boys?” Lisa Elliot was worried. Something was off when Jesse Hawkes decided to phone her.
“Yeah,” he replied anxiously. “Matt’s in the hospital and I decided to let Cody stay with him. My boys are really close.” He took a deep breath. “You see, Matt saved his brother and two deaf girls from a wounded bear but during this he was also shot. From a man we thought to have put behind bars once already.”
“Oh dear God! Is Matt going to be okay?” Lisa was shocked. “How are you holding up, Jesse? Jackie and Cody? Who was it?”
Jesse sighed again. “We’re dealing, I think. Jackie visits as often as she can, and so do I. As said, Cody is staying with Matt the whole time.” He sighed again. “You see, Roy Culhane and Matt have some history together, knowing each other since high school. And Roy tried to be a High Mountain Ranger while I was still in charge of it. Never mind, he failed several tests and I decided to wash him out just as Matt decided to leave the law and become a Ranger instead. As you can see, it worked well for Matt.”
“Wait,” Lisa cut in curiously. “Matt should have been a lawyer instead of a Ranger? Interesting to know.” She sighed now too. “I take it Roy blamed you and Matt for his failure?”
“Yeah,” he replied slowly. “Roy returned to Tahoe some months ago, working at our local store, as he was on probation. We talked a bit after Matt had told me about him being back. He pitched a fit and went after Matt who wanted to save a deer.” He took a deep breath. “Anyway, Matt climbed down and Roy came to the place, cutting his rope, making Matt fall down and blow up his knee.”
“Oh my,” Lisa said shocked. “And how was he able to return now? I take it, the wounds of the bear weren’t the only ones on Matt.”
“He found himself a good lawyer who managed to convince a judge to set him free despite his criminal record. Mike managed this. While saving the girls and Cody from the bear, Matt was shot what the girls have seen. They showed Cody and me a proof of it and Roy also came back to the crime scene where Mike arrested him. And the doctors found a bullet in Matt’s right side. Well, that’s it, Lisa.”
“What do you need from me, Jesse? Tell me. I’ll do anything,” Lisa promised, half crying herself.
“Give us the laws and all we need to put Roy away for good and with a local ban sentence, or whatever it’s called,” Jesse said slowly. “Could you help us here?”
“Sure, I’m going to do that, along with some digging on my own about this Roy Culhane. If wanted, I can also return to Tahoe and well, we can see each other again,” Lisa suggested and hoped for a good answer.
“Do as you like, Lisa and thanks,” Jesse said finally and hung up. Standing up again, he walked out of the office and was greeted with anxious views. Jesse just smiled. “I got Lisa Elliot to help us and she’ll do more. She’ll send us the needed information and maybe come over as well. I’m going to Jackie’s house now.”
The Rangers smiled as well and were glad to get some help. After all, they all needed a light at the end of this tunnel.
At Jackie’s house, Jesse and she settled down and talked about life, their boys and still hoped that their son would wake up soon. But with Cody there, the chance for Matt to wake up was certainly higher. Despite everything, the boys were close to each other.
One week laterLisa’s office had sent them all needed information for the upcoming trial before Lisa decided to come to Tahoe herself. She wanted to see all again, especially the boys, yet at the moment Jesse, Mike and Tim worked on the accusation for Roy Culhane. They had convinced the judge to get the trial happen on Friday.
Meanwhile Jackie and Robin met at the hospital and talked about her boys. Jackie cried from time to time. “There’s still no reaction coming from Matt,” she said, turning to Robin. “Cody said the squeezing switches from hard to light. He keeps talking to him. He’s only gone when the nurses kicked him out.” She smiled a bit.
Robin laid her hand on the woman’s shoulder. “Yeah, the boys are really close,” she replied smiling as well. “Oh, by the way, the boys at the station told me that Matt knows the American Sign Language. Did you know this?”
Jackie’s eyes grew wide. “No, I didn’t, to be honest. He only told me once that he’d taken some extra courses but never what it was. It came handy here.” She chuckled now. “Yeah, I can imagine that it surprised everyone, even Jesse and Cody.” Tears ran over her cheeks again. “Let’s just hope he awakes soon.”
“You have to believe in your boys,” Robin assured the mother. “And Lisa Elliot will be here by Friday for the trial against Roy Culhane. All will be fine in the end, you see.”
Jackie just smiled at the woman who she knew held her eldest boy’s heart secretly, though they never would admit it freely. Yet it was good that anyone supported them.
Friday came quicker than anyone expected. Lisa had ordered anyone involved to the station where she would meet them. She had some questions still which needed to be answered before she would visit Matt and Cody at the hospital. So, Friday morning and all men and women included stood on the porch of the Ranger station and awaited Lisa’s arrival back in Tahoe.
Just ten minutes later, a little Sedan appeared and a well dressed woman came out, smiling at the people in front of her. “Hi guys, so nice to be back, though it could have been in a better situation,” Lisa greeted them and hugged everyone. “So, did you manage all I asked for?”
“Yeah, we did. The trial starts at 1 pm, just like last time you were here,” Mike explained sighing and looked briefly at Jesse. He looked directly at her now. “Have you found out more about Roy and his criminal record?”
“Not really,” Lisa confirmed sadly. “Just what astonished me was that the State allowed him to return to Tahoe, even if they knew that he’d made a bad experience here. How long ago was it, Jesse?”
“Just two years and a bit.” Jesse looked at the lawyer now. “Why do you want to know this, Lisa?”
Lisa grinned now. “Only out of curiosity. It made me wonder the whole time how that was possible, you know. I can ask my opposite and the judge for that.”
“In that case, you weren’t the only one, Lisa,” Tim said smiling a bit now too. “All of us were confused about Roy being back and so close to a place which had hurt him, obviously. And Jesse didn’t let us know at first but later we were told about Roy’s failure.”
“I see,” she said sighing. “Now if you don’t mind, I’d like to visit the boys and speak with them, or at least Cody. We’ll see each other at 1 pm at the court. Don’t worry, we’ll get it done.” Lisa smiled at all and finally went to the hospital.
“You heard the lady,” Jesse said smiling. “Let’s get it done!” And all made their way slowly to the court, waiting there for Lisa and the trial.
At the hospital, in Matt’s room, Cody was sitting there, holding his brother’s hand and squeezing it from time to time while talking to him as well. “C’mon, big brother, you gotta wake up now. It’s been a long time. Everyone is waiting, especially me. Please, Matt.” He didn’t want to cry again but the tears came anyway. A knock on the door startled him, wiping his tears away quickly. “Come in.”
Lisa Elliot walked slowly in and gasped softly at seeing Matt in the hospital bed. Her gasp made Cody turn around and she quickly walked over to him, hugging him and more. “How are you doing, Cody? Any signs for Matt to wake up? You okay?”
“Hey, Lisa,” he greeted her smiling. “Nice to see you again.” He sighed and looked at his brother sadly. “I don’t know. I still feel guilty, though I should not. Matt told me that he was just doing his job. There are squeezes from time to time but no, he hasn’t woken up again yet.” He looked at her. “Why are you here?”
She smiled now. “Your Dad called me a week ago, saying he needed my help to find the laws against Roy Culhane. I was really surprised here, and I didn’t know that Matt should have been a lawyer instead of a Ranger.” Lisa looked sadly at the man in the bed. “The Ranger job is right for him.”
Cody laughed a bit but never left his place. “Yeah, that was Mom’s wish for Matt, yet he returned to Tahoe and decided to follow Dad’s footsteps. Mom was not happy, of course, but in the end she accepted Matt’s wish. It worked out well.”
“Yeah,” she agreed smiling and ruffled Cody’s hair. “I can see that. You’re both mountain kids. Anyway, I should go now. I’m needed at the court. I promise there will be a happy ending.”
Cody just nodded and turned back to his task here while Lisa quietly slipped out of the room.
At the court, Jesse was waiting for Lisa outside as the lawyer then returned from the hospital. She seemed to have been crying but collected herself again by taking a deep breath. “You okay, Lisa? Can you do this now?”
Lisa smiled at the man. “I’m fine, Jesse. No need to worry about me. And yes, I can do it. This is for Matt, remember? I’m sure that with the trial behind us, Matt will wake up, you’ll see.” She took a deep breath again. “Let’s get started then!”
Both smiled then and walked in, making all turn around. Jesse took his seat in the audience, next to his wife and all Rangers while Lisa went to her place in front of the judge. Having now known all facts, she just wanted to put this trial quickly behind and she was sure to achieve that.
Judge Barrett greeted the lawyer. “Ms Elliot, so nice to join us. I’ve read all you’ve given to me, yet I’d like to still hear what you have to say. It seems to me that you know the Hawkes family already.”
“That’s true, your honor but it was a different case back then,” Lisa explained smiling and took a deep breath. “I just want to get it done since the Hawkes family and Rangers are worried about their son and leader. And the Rangers are also needed out there, in the mountains, doing their jobs.” She cleared her throat and started. “As you can see, your honor, Matt Hawkes and Roy Culhane have some history together. High school, then High Mountain Rangers though with different paths. Roy Culhane leaving and Matt Hawkes joining. Anyway, as you can see they met again a few months ago as Roy was back here on probation. Though Roy had made a bad experience here and blamed Matt and Jesse Hawkes for his own mistakes. Why was he back here? He should not have come back here at all.”
“Ms Elliot, I agree, that looks kinda unusual after such a short time period,” Judge Barrett said sighing. “But the county makes the decision, not us. It was a mistake, certainly.” He looked over the papers again. “As I can see he returned briefly again. That worries me more though.”
“Yeah, me too,” Lisa agreed sighing as well. “As Sheriff McBride had found out, Roy Culhane found himself a good lawyer and asked several times for being released. He was there because he’d tried to kill Matt Hawkes before. Mr Hawkes just hurt his knee, thank god, yet still, the anger obviously never went away completely. And with that in mind, Mr Culhane returned a second time and shot Matt Hawkes who saved two deaf girls and his little brother from a wounded bear.”
Judge Barrett paled a bit. “Oh my God? Is Mr Hawkes going to be okay?”
“From what Cody and Jesse Hawkes told me, it’s going to be a long road for Matt but sleep is the best way to recover, don’t you think?” Lisa looked at the judge who agreed nodding. “Thanks. Anyway, we just want to ask for a No Contact Order on Roy Culhane and that he should stay away from any Hawkes and the High Mountain Rangers, with no contact to all of them in any ways. No calls, letters or emails, even through a third party. They need it and they’ve earned it.”
Judge Barrett looked at the lawyer and at the other one who remained calm for some reason. “Mr Towles, any objections to this case or is your client guilty in this mentioned things? You are way too quiet in my eyes.”
Mr Towles stood up and looked at the judge. “There’s nothing to say, your honor. I’ve read briefly the last transcript of my client’s initial trial. He mentioned very shortly about his life back here. I mean that he’d been here in Tahoe before.” He looked at his client quietly and at the Hawkes family but decided still. “We accept anything since my client seems to feel he’s not wanted here anymore.” He quickly sat down again.
“Clearly,” the judge agreed and looked at anyone in the room. “Therefore I’m passed the following ruling. Mr Culhane has to leave Tahoe for good with No Contact Order with 40 miles away which can still be adjusted if need be. And there will be no contact to the Hawkes family and the High Mountain Rangers at all, in any form. No revision is allowed. Thank you.” He stood up and all others did the same. Looking at Mr Hawkes, he said, “Wish you all the best for your son, Mr Hawkes.”
“Thanks,” Jesse said and smiled. Jackie simply hugged him and so all Rangers were just simply relieved. Roy Culhane and his lawyer just left the court without any words. They were out of their lives for good.
“Lisa, you’re invited to the station and we could celebrate a bit,” Tim suggested smiling. “You two too, Jesse and Jackie. And Mike naturally as well. For the moment we can do that, right?”
The family, the Sheriff and Lisa looked at each other and then agreed nodding. So, the whole group was on their way to the Ranger station and just enjoyed their victory. One goal was achieved, and another one would be soon as well. Matt will be back! After their little party, all promised Lisa to call her once Matt was awake.
Two weeks laterMatt groaned slightly as he woke up again. Confused, he noticed a weight on him and opened his eyes to see a mop of brown hair. Naturally he knew who it was and nudged him slightly, saying as loud as he could, “Hey Toad, wake up! You stink!”
“What?” Cody answered sleepily and saw green eyes opened. “Matt! You’re back! You scared me!” He threw his arms around Matt’s neck and just cried happy tears, feeling Matt’s arm on his back. “I’m going to get the others. Tell them the good news!” He stood up and walked to the door grinning.
“Toad?” Matt asked quietly and his baby brother turned around again. “Get a bath, please!” His brother grinned and walked away finally. Sighing, Matt thought about of what had happened but he clearly couldn’t remember. All was blank. He’d need to speak with his Dad and Hart.
Cody raced to the station and nearly ripped of the door, saying out loud; “He’s awake! Matt is awake!” He saw his father coming out of his brother’s office and hugged him tightly. “Matt’s awake. He said I should take a bath but I think you should talk to him.” He ran up the steps to take a shower as ordered.
Jesse was baffled and shocked at the same time but let out a breath of relief. His son was back after such a long time sleeping. Well, it seemed to have worked. He turned around and saw all happy faces. “Can one of you phone Jackie and tell her the good news? And Lisa as well.” Izzy simply nodded. “Thanks. Tim,” he went on and the man looked up. “We should go to the hospital and speak with Matt. I’m sure he has some questions.”
Tim nodded and both men walked over where they arrived half an hour later. Walking into Matt’s room, both looked very relieved to see Matt awake.
Jesse just hugged his son. “You feeling okay, son? You really had us scared this time,” the older man said sighing. “Cody didn’t want to leave your side, no matter what the doctor, me or your Mom said but he agreed to go away when they changed your bandages. After asking for it, naturally. Anyway, he’s now in the shower and probably in your room at the station, thinking and all.”
Matt just smiled at his Dad. “Sorry,” he replied. “I’ve noticed him all by my side but I couldn’t open my eyes.” He looked at the two men. “Can you tell me what really happened? I just remember saving one of the girls and tackling Cody down. The rest is blank. Dad? Tim?”
Tim looked briefly at Jesse and sighed. “Well, you got that right, Matt but what Cody and the girls confirmed us that they had heard a shot. Cody though just faint but the girls saw it clearly.” He cleared his throat now. “We managed to find out who it was, by going back to the crime scene and the girls’ description.”
“And who was it?” Matt now wanted to know curiously. He got suspicious when no one answered him. “Tell me!”
Jesse stepped forward and took a deep breath. “It was Roy Culhane. He managed to get a good lawyer and was back on the mountains recently.” He ran a hand through his hair. “Still, we got him away again by calling in a favor and a visit from a good friend who helped us with the laws.” Matt raised an eyebrow. “We couldn’t use you, so we turned to … Lisa.”
“I see. So he’s gone for good?” His Dad and Tim nodded. “Good. So how long until I can get out of here?” Matt asked curiously, yawning a bit. The talk was slowly tiring him.
Just then the doctor came in. “Hi Matt, Jesse, Tim. I’m Dr. Bishoff. You were out for a long while, Matt. It may take some time still. We need to work on your muscles and all, so please be patient.” The doctor smiled then. “Besides, you have a good health, so it should not take this long. See you soon!” And he was gone again.
Jesse could see that talking tired his son. “Son, you need to sleep. Besides, I’m sure your little ‘shadow’ will be back soon.” He smirked a bit but Matt realized quickly who was meant. “I may have to take him out of school for your time of recovery.” He sighed naturally.
“Let him learn here! He can go to school the normal way for this time. I’m sure the girls at school wouldn’t mind once. I know my little brother,” Matt said yawning again.
Jesse walked over and kissed his boy on his blond head. “Sleep, son. Cody will be back before you know it. I’ll talk to him about your plan. Sleep, boy.”
Tim decided to follow Jesse’s lead. “Sleep, Matt. We have everything under control. Don’t worry.”
There was a knock on the door and Cody peeked in. Jesse took his chance by walking out but saying, “Tim?” The Ranger just nodded.
“Dad? What’s up?” Cody asked curiously as his Dad pushed him away.
“I know you want to stay with your brother,” Jesse began slowly and looked into his son’s eyes. “But you need to go to school, still that’s why Matt wants you to learn here, and I’m sure the nurses will lend you a bed for the time being if you’re kind.” Cody grinned and smirked. “Matt’s sleeping at the moment. Let him, please.” Cody nodded and just wanted back to his brother what Jesse could see easily. “Go! Release Tim.”
The door opened and closed again. Tim came out. “Matt will be back before we know it,” he said sighing. “Cody will help him. They need each other. And we got everything covered at the station.”
“Still, let me know if you need help,” Jesse suggested smiling. “If only for me to man the radio.” Tim smirked at the older man. “Matt is strong, stubborn and just like his old man. You know that, Tim.”
The Ranger just nodded and both men walked back to the station where work was waiting. And a happy mother and wife.
EPILOGThe Rangers, Sheriff Mike McBride and the Hawkes family were gathered around the station for a barbecue. Matt was tired of sitting at his home and reading way too many ‘get well’ – cards, even one from Lisa Elliot included. She’d written on it an old law joke which he also could remember but who could have told her about his former ‘career’? Then it came back to his mind. His Dad was at fault here, but well, the contact would remain anyway.
Two long months had gone by and Matt was coming back to command. And his little ‘shadow’ was still glued to his side. Even now. “Cody!” he said clearly annoyed. “I’m fine.” He just got a look. “Or just as fine as to be expected. You know, I love you but this is too much, even for me!” Matt sighed exasperated.
All men switched with manning the grill from time to time and the women dealt with salads and other things, yet all smirked in his direction. Even his parents behind their cups of coffee, knowing their sons well enough. Jesse let his son know, “Matt, just let him! He stops on his own.”
Matt just rolled his eyes. “If you say so, Dad. But he never stuck close to me for such a long period of time. I can’t do my job if Cody’s that close to me.”
“You suggested it, son, not me,” their Dad let him know smiling.
“In that case, I should go up to the cabin.”
Cody decided to put his ten cents in. “Well, big brother, we have to make up for the years we were separated and for your information, I’ll still follow you to any place you go. You know that I want to be a Ranger as well, so the best way to learn it is from you, Matty.”
“Wonderful,” the big brother said, sitting down and rolling his eyes again and noticed how his Rangers grinned as well. Matt just shook his head. It was best to remain silent.
Not five minutes later, his ‘shadow’ took a seat next to him. “You doing okay, Matt? I’ll get you anything you want or need. Just say it.”
The Rangers, Mike and his family laughed at his expense. Matt just decided, it was going to be a long road. Shaking his head, he simply made up his mind to enjoy his time with Cody.
