Clearly this episode was originally meant to be the S3 premier.
Three months have now passed since the Faction's defeat. The Vera sisters have ended their isolation and have rejoined the outside world. Both Mel and Maggie are back at college (Mel as an instructor and Maggie as a student).
However, all is not well. As a result of their uses the Source to restore magic, they are now "allergic" to each other and magical beings. They cannot touch or get too close to each other (and it this wasn't inspired by the COVID pandemic, I'll take my shirt off and eat it). However, Macy is trying to find a cure.
Nice to see Macy using science as well as magic to tackle this problem (she has converted the command center into a makeshift lab). She is a trained scientist and it's good to see her put that knowledge to use.
Meanwhile, Mel meets a transgender student in her class, whom she bonds with. She understands what he is going through, being bullied and such (no doubt she herself faced that). Like how she pushed for that book to be part of the curriculum. When the administration wouldn't do it, she took matters into her own hands and passed the book out to her class.
And Maggie has to deal with this professor who refuses to look beyond that she's a woman and a POC. If I were her, I'd tell the arrogant jerk to get stuffed.
And it seems that the "allergy" is tied to that tablet that Harry found, and that monster they fought. Guess this is the big mystery that they're gonna have to solve.
A promising change of direction.

This'll certainly bring up problems with the sisters then and Harry not being a cosmic taxi to Mel, Macy, and Maggie or being able to heal them willy nilly which'll bring up new interesting storylines with the girls not getting things easy having to work hard to achieve what they need doing proper research and thinking.

Yeah, they're going to have to work to get the job done.
They were still able to vanquish that monster, but it was harder than usual for them.

Going forward people watching the reboot still might like this new arrangement than the generic vanquish making the writers have to come up with new creative ideas on how to do things that could pull back previous viewers if things are done well having them skip season 2 altogether and the first three episodes of season 3 and go straight to this one the supposed season 3 premiere obviously.

This was definitely thrust upon them by the pandemic but it raises some potentially interesting scenarios. It also means they can't focus purely on love interests and that Mel in particular, will have to become more than the perpetual lover with no other identifiable traits. I'm intrigued to see where they'll go with them both back in a college setting.
Great to see the new addition of Brain Markinson as Maggie's professor. He's a great actor who I loved in Continuum so I'm looking forward to seeing more of him. His character seemed impressed by Maggie's spunk and while he's not going to give her an easy ride, I think he'll be someone who can bring something new out of her.

The one thing the pandemic will allow is fewer love interest/romantic scenes, which means more plot, fewer love scenes.
I hear the show continues to lose viewers, even if it is renewed, people are not watching. According to what I saw, it is close to being lower than Dynasty level ratings. But It's nice The CW has lots of faith in their shows.
It's nice to see they went back to what made the original work when they give the sisters an identity outside of being witches and juggling real lives versus magical lives.
Fewer love interests focus sound great, that is what ruined the original series. Hopefully, they learned a lesson.

Nice that the sisters are back out in the world again. Yes, they still have their command center, but we have Mel and Maggie back at college. This will allow them to introduce new recurring characters for the sisters to interact with.
Hopefully, they can put the mess of S2 behind them and rebuild.
