Another great episode.
And we got a pick-up for a second season a day before the second episode airs, WOO HOO! I am still really LOVING this show, and this was a great follow up to the pilot. I must add, normally shows suffer with a pretty stale and dull second episode, but Superman and Lois wasn't that.
I loved that Lois did the voiceover to open the episode. Showing their move from Metropolis to Smallville officially, and the struggles of if this was a good decision for their family.
The Fortress of Solitude here is way different that how it was laid out in Supergirl. But I'm glad, the show is really separating itself so much from the other DC shows, and it's a good thing. I'm hoping we'll see more deeper inside the Fortress soon.
The Kent's have settled into Smallville, and while they do appear closer then ever, there is plenty of drama as they settle in.
Captain Luthor continues to intrigue, and boy was his Earth dark! I'm really worried Luthor is going to bring General Lane to his cause. I actually kind of hope he goes down the villain route here. He caused more trouble for Clark then Luthor did in the comics at one point. I get he is from another earth where Captain Luthor was the hero, and that Earth's Superman was evil, but I feel it's too easy if Captain Luthor is truly good.
We finally meet Morgan Edge in the flesh and boy is he a creep. I can't wait to see Lois take him down so much. Speaking of Lois, her quitting the Daily Planet and joining the Smallville Gazette will make for a great storyline.
Jon and Jordan continue to be my favorite storyline, but I HATE this whole thing with Sarah. Both of them like her, so you know thats going to tear their already brotherly bond apart. More of the brotherly scenes please. Thankfully Sarah wasn't too much seen. I love how even if he has no powers or yet, Jonathan cares deeply for his brother. A favorite little moment I liked was that warm hug that Jonathan and Jordan share after their first school day apart from one another.
Speaking of Sarah Cushing. It looks like she is already suspicious of the Kent family because she keeps pointing out the holes in Jordan's story about staying home from school because he was sick. How long until she finds out his secret. And how insane it will be if she figures it out over Lana (who I'm sure doesn't know, the pilot did point that out, unless she knows but isn't letting on to Clark, I have no idea).
The actors Jordan Elsass and Alexander Garfin playing Jonathan and Jordan Kent are great and growing on me. Particularly when they’re getting along, as they are fun and believable as brothers, and are free of the overwritten teen dialogue that has become so over done the last decade. It also helps that the entire young cast are actually believable as high school freshmen and 14 years old. They are not forcing them to act older than they are.
So Jordan's powers were just a fluke, according to the Jor El hologram. Does this mean the show is going to flip the script and give the power story to Jon? Could Jor El be hiding something about Jordan, I feel like he is. Those Kryptonian Holograms can be pretty crafty that way LOL
I did love that Jordan is named after Jor El. Both of Clarks boys are named after each of his fathers.
I truly think Clark is sincere about wanting to be a better father, but he really should have brought Jonathan to the Fortress of Solitude as well, since it would be wise for him to know this stuff, plus make him feel included. I guess various villains and infinite crises can't compare to raising teenagers! But Clark isn't perfect, and has to deal with the struggles of raising 14 year olds like any normal dad, but still.
Kyle really is a piece of crap and a loser. I HATE him so much, but the show is likely wanting us to hate him. He idolizes a man who stomps on anyone that stands in his way. How could Lana marry a guy like that, I'm serious. Poor girl needs to divorce his ass asap. I liked Lana more this episode than last.
LOL, I laughed when there’s a great little bit at the town meeting when Jonathan and Jordan both put their heads in their hands when their mom goes into full journalism mode. They must be thinking, oh boy, not this again.
The Smaville reporter we meet Chrissy Beppo was fun. I can't help but think her name would've been Chloe Sullivan had Allison Mack not gotten into crazy crap in real life and basically killed the character off in any continuity, since she was mentioned on Supergirl as Clark's friend. I'm certain that was their plan, but no longer.
Lois Lane quit the Daily Planet, I never thought I’d see the day that would happen. But so very proud of her for not taking Edges crap when he rewrote her piece. Now take him down my girl, and make us proud.
With both Lois and Clark free from the struggles of the Daily Planet. Given how "old school" journalism like newspapers are overshadowed by web sites these days, it kind of feels modern. The Daily Planet always was an important component of any Superman story, which is fine because we stan and love print journalism, but taking Lois and Clark out of this familiar territory opens up a world of storytelling possibilities. I'm really interested to see how Lois adjusts to working at a small-town newspaper, especially now that she's pursuing such a huge story (Morgan Edge) without the Planet's resources. It does feel like it means Lois has to work extra hard to have her voice heard, and it allows her to take down Edge. Perhaps the goal is Lois eventually working towards rebuilding her own journalism business or company, and running one.
Odds and Ends:*So are Lois and Clark going to be raising their family on the salary Lois will make from a small town newspaper that’s literally owned and run by one person? Let’s hope Chrissy Beppo pays her well.
*Is it just me, or is does the Smallville reporter Chrissy look almost identical to Bruce Willis' girlfriend Fabienne from the film Pulp Fiction. I am not sure if that was an intentional or not.
Overall thoughts: Good episode for the Kent's and love the family. What is working for this show and I hope is always the true heart and soul of the show, and they don't let what some other DC do, where other characters step up and take over like what happens to shows all the time. I liked Lana more this week, but HATE her jerk husband still.
Grade: A
Moments:
1. You know what, babe? You do your Superman stuff and I will do my Lois Lane stuff.
2. Lois standing up to Edge and telling him to shove it and quits.
3. Jonathan and Jordan both putting their heads in their hands when their mom goes into full journalism mode during the city council meeting.
