1x13 Fail SafeBitsite was the highlight of this episode as Lois. She always knocks it out of the park, I love her Lois so much. Big mom energy from Lois tonight!
A good follow-up with Kyle’s speeches from the pilot. His constant “everyone bailed, we stayed and supported the community that raised us” is really biting him in the butt now. Anyone here who has lived in a small farm town knows that what’s happening with the Cushings (and the mayor for that matter) is annoyingly realistic. I do get why Kyle was having second thoughts on wanting to leave town.
It was also great to see the show grapple with how fragile small towns can be and how its institutions like local government or local newspaper can make or break it
Jonathan and Jordan skip school. Jordan and Sarah were cute together and Jordan was starting to grow from the brat we're used too. But seeing Jonathan go off with that girl who blew him off episodes ago, I was nervous for where this was going and what would happen to his character.
I did not trust this girl one bit, and was so worried Jonathan would fall for her. Turns out, he saw through her and knew she was just more interested in learning more details on Edge and what he might know about the incident because his grandfather works for the DEO. He decides to leave her and go home. Smart boy, this girl looks like trouble.
Jonathan returns home and talks to Irons. But Clark is angry he isn’t in school. Lois struggles with keeping the truth about what happened from Chrissy at the paper. When Lois won’t admit she knows more about what happened, and why she won’t investigate more. Chrissy asks her to leave. Sam calls Lois worried about Clark.
When Lois comes home, she finds Clark upset that Jonathan skipped school which is something he wouldn’t normally do. He tells Clark a girl kept asking him about Edge, and she used him and saw through her. Lois interrupts the conversation and sends Jonathan to his room.
Both Clark and Lois have different points of view on the DEO weapons. Lois HATES the idea that that these weapons could fall into hands of his enemies like Lex for instance.
When Jordan and Sarah are arrested for trespassing on a lake that later Lana used to go too as a kid I'm assuming, which she didn’t know was private property or it now. Lois leaves to bail Jordan out. Before going, she opens up to Clark that she broke her journalist rule and lied to Chrissy at the paper to protect this family and its secrets. Lois telling Clark that she needs to stay angry to maintain the emotional momentum for reprimanding Jordan was a great touch.
Lana and Lois come bail Sarah and Jordan out. They let off with a warning that they didn’t know it was a private property. It did leave to a wonderful bonding moment between Lana and Lois, that really shows they are friends.
Lana and her family can’t catch a break. The mayor who was going to set the record straight for them only wants to cover his own ass for the next election. Lois confronts him upset that he is going it. It prompts her to agree with Kyle that they should consider packing up and leaving, if the town is tuning on them for trusting Edge, when they had no idea he was was using people to give them powers.
The best moment was the one between Clark and Lois resolving their conflict. Lois comes home and they both at the same time they say need to talk about their fight. Clark lets Lois go first. She tells him he is wrong, he has a good heart and is strong. But Clark tells Lois that his father taught him how to control his powers. But for the first time in 40 years, when Zod took over he felt what it was like to REALLY let go. That feeling worries him.
Clark’s worry about losing himself felt really powerful. He’s always been against Kryptonite as a failsafe, and this experience clearly terrified and shook him. Lois compromises with keeping it, for the off chance he loses control, even though she believes it won’t ever happen. She doesn’t trust the DEO and thinks they need to trust someone else with it. Love to see character development.
Tyler & Bitsie's chemistry shines through so much. Their argument here another great depiction of them both being kind of right, disagreeing, and finding a way to compromise.
Both Clark/Lois and Lana/Kyle sit down their kid/s over ditching school. Sarah hates sitting in class while people talk trash about her family, and hates it in Smallville, and would rather be grounded I her room. This has them thinking they should call it a night and start fresh. Lois and Clark yell at the boys for skipping school and they shouldn’t disrespect the work their teachers put in or their classes. Jonathan and Jordan both say they are sorry, Jonathan does it first, then Jordan. Luckily Jordan is doing good for the most part and he's come a long way from the bratty kid he started as, as his reaction is not like it was a while back, if he was getting yelled out, he accepts responsibility. I sure hope so. He still has a way to go Jordan, he isn't ready to become Super Boy just yet, that I hope won't happen until the end of season 2, since I know it will happen sometime.
Again the Jonathan/Jordan stuff felt like filler to me this week, while the other parts were really going somewhere. I guess they just wanted their conflicts against being parents to have lots on their plate.
I loved Clark telling the boys that small towns are fun. Something Lois laughs at and they have a romantic moment, where she tells Clark she’s still sold on her small-town guy.
Lois admits to Chrissy she lied, and that she can’t write the story as she’s too close to it, but she has a testimony from her father, that is the best she can give. She thinks Chrisy can write it. She hopes she can earn back Chrissy’s trust in time.
At the DEO Edge escapes his prison, expected. Superman arrives and goes looking for Edge with no luck.
Clark trusting John with the responsibility is a great evolution of their relationship with each other. "You came here to prevent from taking over the world world. That's all I'm asking you to do." Great stuff
This show does a great job at making you feel the stakes in the preview for when the show comes back in two weeks! That shot of Edge at the sun and the promo with Lois crying asking what they’re going to do has me genuinely terrified.
Odds and Ends:*Nearly freaked out thinking John was painting an S shield on his suit, but the Junebug is a lovely tribute. Steel Works next season?
Overall thoughts: Good episode, but felt more like a build-up episode to what is coming up in the next episodes. Tyler & Bitsie's chemistry shines through so much. Their argument here another great depiction of them both being kind of right, disagreeing, and finding a way to compromise. The Jordan and Jonathan stuff felt like pure filler just to add more background drama in the middle of the C&L conflict.
Grade: A-
Moments: 1. Lana: “Have you noticed?” / Lois: “How punchable the mayor’s face is. Yes I have” / They both laugh.
2. “I’m still sold on my small town guy.”
3. Clark and Lois coming to a compromise over the weapons.
