Early Friday morning, Rogers, my ISP, suddenly went down. And it happened all across Canada. Countless, such as myself, woke up to find we had no Internet, no television, and no phones (luckily my cell phone is with another server and was unaffected).
However, it was much more than that. The outage basically knocked us back to the Cash And Nothing But era, because the Interact machines in many stories quit working. So, if you relied on Interact to pay for stuff, you were shit out of luck. Also, some ATM's also went down and even 9-1-1 services were affected.
And many who now work from home (due to COVID) found that they were unable to, since they couldn't connect to their work. God know how many wages were lost in this fiasco.
The outage lasted nearly 24 hours. By Saturday morning, my television and phone were working again. As was the Internet, mostly. However, I found that there were some sites I couldn't connect to, and Proboards was one of them, unfortunately.
Calling Rogers tech support was useless as the call volume was so high that it either hung up on you, or you got put on hold for three hours before you could talk to anyone!
According to Rogers, the outage was caused by "a network system failure after a maintenance update". However, if you ask me, that's a cover story. What I really think happened is that they were hacked and are too embarrassed to admit it.
Anyway, to many Canadians, Rogers's name is now mud. Some are quitting Rogers for other provider and I've even heard discussions of lawsuits against Rogers.
Anyway, as you can all see, I was able to get back here just now. I hope the worse is over, but, if I vanish again, that will be why.

It's horrible this happened to many people including you Tim. If Rogers was hacked then they need to beef up online security it seems although hackers can still find ways around that then.

Wow Tim. That's horrible.
If it's hacked. They need to do some serious stuff with their security Tim.
Rogers has serious explaining to do. They'll lose plenty of customers.

Ouch. If that happened to one of our providers, good night! Though they watch over this, so they say.

I would hate to be Rogers right now, because their name is mud in this country at the moment.
There are lots of angry Canadians (I'm one of them) because of this fiasco. Seems Rogers is in serious damage control mode now, pleading with customers not to drop them.
Well, I won't for now. However, if this happens again, I'm done with Rogers.

Then there should be a free choice. Though I was already asked to switch several times but I'm happy with my provider.

Luckily nothing's happened yet with my provider EE though my internet cuts out slightly sometimes then.
If anything like that did happen though I wouldn't be impressed especially having resigned for a further 2 years starting from last of course I'd hope I could leave without having to pay anything obviously.

That is scary, Tim. If the Internet, cable and credit card payments went out, people here would riot. I’ve noticed that in Canada there’s fewer cable and telephone companies than in the US, there’s so many competing companies that they’re terrified of losing customers so they’re stringent with securing data. That sucks about Rogers, they should really beef up their security

This is why monopoly's are bad. From what I gather Rogers is a huge provider in Canada, and has the majority of the population using its services. Should they go down, chaos ensues. If this was a hack, then hopefully they beef up their security to avoid it happening again.

In Canada, there are four such companies that I know of, Rogers, Telus*, Bell, and Shaw**.
However, it seems that Rogers is the big fish here. How that might change now remains to be seen. I can see the other companies circling like vultures.
*Telus is the company that my cell phone belongs to. That is why it was unaffected by the outage.
**Rogers is trying to buy Shaw, but this fiasco might sink that deal. Stay tuned.

Those are the four Majors I know of too. I'm part of Telus for both my phone and Internet. Sorry that happened. Rogers is in a very bad state at the moment. Apparently we in Canada have some of the lowest internet standards among OECD countries, as a result of high costs and slow internet speeds.

I was wondering about you, Katie, on whether you were affected or not (since you're the only other Canadian here).
Glad to see that you weren't.

Seems like the other companies are about to get a big influx of new customers.

Be interesting to find out what answers Rogers will give.
