Hi, I have no idea where to post this. But I had a very interesting day today at work.
We have a new employee. She's very lovely. I discovered she actually was born in America in Georgia and moved here four years ago when she was 29 (so she's 33 now. She didn't tell me, so of course, I can do the math in my head) because her husband is Australian. It took me a bit to figure it out, her accent sounded Australian but a few times she spoke I could hear some American. So I guess in the four years she's been here she adopted a hybrid accent.
I asked her how she's found living here. She did admit it took her some time to adjust to missing her friends and family back home, but that everybody was nice and supportive.
It took her a bit to get around using the Metric System. But it wasn't a hard adjustment after a while.
She does miss some of her favourite foods she can't get here. I recommended to her a USA Foods Store where she could buy some of her food back home.
What she did love so much was that we don't tip in Australia, because we pay the workers in the hospitality industry minimum wage. So it's no custom to do so unless the service is really REALLY good.
Although she did tell me she might consider getting citizenship next year when she is eligible. She feels much safer in Australia due to how much safer it is in regard to gun control and overall just never having fear to go out and worry (My heart breaks that so many Americans have this fear every day, but you know it'll take forever until the government gets their act together with gun control). She was shocked about the free health care system here and was expecting to pay a huge bill when she had to go to the hospital to get treated for an accidental burn.
I've met plenty of Americans in Australia before, but this was the first time in my life I've ever worked with one. I'm going to enjoy getting to know her more.

What she hasn't liked was Vegemite, which I don't blame her unless you grew up on it and started eating it as a child you won't like it typically. Not even I like it. Also the lack of Free Wi-Fi in most public places and a lack of Mexican Food places (which I agree we don't have the best here or at least where I'm based, I can't say what other states are like.
