I had the most frightening experience. yesterday my paypal account was in negative balance and I got sent an email that I can fix it by adding funds. Well I received a call from someone claiming to be PayPal. The number read correct as was a Sydney number. They processed my details to put the funds in to bring it to zero.
Well soon I discovered the number calling wasn't PayPal at all. And I called the 1800 number and discovered that the apparent number wasn't paypal and they only have two numbers. So I freaked our that I got scammed. I've immediately changed my paypal password.
The lady saw that there is a pending money transfer from my bank account to paypal. Were going to wait until it clears or doesn't and take it from there.
What I don't get is how the timing. I do need to fix this negative balance issue but how did this scammer know and they processes the request that was suppose to happen.
I'll see what happens in a few days. Just know that from now on I'll never accept any calls period from anybody claiming to be a company. I'll call them. I can't believe this happened. I feel so stupid. because the number was so legit based in Sydney in had the exact same system the real Paypal office had with the prompts and all. I can't believe it.
Well see what happens on Thursday or Monday latest with the money going to my paypal account.

In that case, my phone warns me with showing a red button during a call or just sort out any bad SMS. So far I've been lucky.
Now I only need to change my boss. *sighs*

Wen you get a call allegedly from your bank or your credit card company, hang up. It's a scam.
Banks and credit card companies don't just call you, rather you call them.

I'm sorry that happened to you matt . As you and everyone else here know I got scammed by people claiming to be from Amazon India for about £79 that was gonna be taken for their Prime membership which I'd just finished a 30-day trial off. That turned into a 6-hour mission with me being £500 worse off because one they had access to my laptop and webcam the second I longer use. I now know Amazon India doesn't call people and have a device that blocks numbers but this type of scam where phone numbers are legit one are common now, unfortunately.

That sucks Matt, hopefully you can sort out the payment issues. My mum got scammed a few years ago thinking she was talking to the bank, luckily she got the money back but that taught me from then on, if I ever receive a call from a company, I'll ask who they are claiming to be, hang up, then ring them back on the official number to be sure.

Thanks everyone!
My next action is to get a debit card to use to bring my negative balance down. Alternatively sending a cheque to PayPal Sydney. I have 28 days to sort it before it goes to the third party collectors agency. But I have no idea what I'm going to do if I get a debit card from my bank and it still declines. As I'm wary sending a cheque. The real last option.
Good news I suppose when calling the bank yesterday they insisted the account I had linked to PayPal will not transfer funds to PayPal because I incorrectly used a Netbank saver which is just an account used to move money from my regular account for all purchases. So whomever tried transferring funds to cover the negative balance that claimed to be PayPal. That will most likely decline soon or a few days.
Touch wood no strange activity on my accounts. So I'm hoping at least that scammer can't get hold of any funds.
I've changed all passwords for my email and PayPal now.
My biggest fear is setting up a debit card to cover the negative balance and the scammers getting into it since they do still have my name and email. I suppose I might start a new bank account linked to my debit card with the money for PayPal only not linked to my every day account. We'll see what the bank says when I go in.

I'll do like adzpower ask who they are hang up then call the correct organisations number. Even of they claim to be legit. It's too scary to risk it as I've learned. It's just not worth the risk.

I occasionally get robo-calls that start with "This is so-and-so from your credit card company..." At that point, I just hang up, because I know it's a scam.

Does your bank matt allow you to have a virtual card that can be used only one time for online purchases? I know some people use this to avoid scams and was wondering if something like that or a pre-paid card could be used for the transfer of money to sort out your negative problem perhaps? The only reason I mention this is that it could be a way for them to not get your money but then you may have to give your name and email to do that possibly. One other option is either creating a new email address or a one-time-only address instead.
