As most of you know, the first two movies deal with Kevin McAllister (Macauley Culkin) battling two dimwitted burglars, Harry and Marv (played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern).
The first movie has Kevin's family accidentally leave him behind when they go to Paris for Christmas. When Harry and Marv try to break into Kevin's house, he lays out a bunch of traps for them and the fun begins.
The second movie, which happens a year later, has Kevin's family going to Florida for Christmas, but Kevin accidentally gets on the wrong plane and ends up in New York City. Harry and Marv are in NYC as well, I guess you know what happens.
When Home Alone 3 came out in 1997, Culkin was too old, so they made this movie around a new family, the Pruit's. The kid in this movie is Alex Pruit (Alex D. Linz). By accident, Alex gets hold of top secret missile chip, which is sought by four international criminals. When the criminals try to get the chip back, Alex gives him a whole lot of hurt with his traps.
Of course, the traps in these movies would kill in real life. It's best to treat them as a live action cartoon (like the old A-Team series, where no one ever died).
There is a category in TV Tropes called Unintentional Period Piece in which the Home Alone movies fit. The first movie would last about five minutes today because Kevin would probably have a cell phone and could easily contact his family, or they him when they realize they'd left him behind.
Notice how fast the family gets through airport security about five minutes after arriving. Try that in the post 9/11 world.
The second movie has Kevin visiting the World Trade Center.
I understand two more Home Alone movies were made, but they were TV movies which rebooted things. Since I've never seen them, I can't comment on them.
