Space: 1999 was a syndicated British/American Science Fiction series that was made in the mid-1970's. It was the last project produced by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, before their marriage broke up.
The premise of this show was centered on the plight of the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha, a scientific research centre on the Moon. Humanity had been storing its nuclear waste in vast disposal sites on the far side of the Moon, but when an unknown form of electromagnetic radiation is detected, the accumulated waste reached critical mass and causes a massive thermonuclear explosion on September 13th, 1999.
The force of the blast hurled the Moon out of Earth orbit and into deep space, thus stranding the 311 personnel stationed on Alpha.
Not long after leaving Earth's solar system, the wandering Moon passed through a black hole and later through a couple of "space warps" which pushed it even further out into the galaxy. During their interstellar journey, the Alphans encountered an array of alien civilizations, dystopian societies, and mind-bending phenomena previously unseen by humanity.
Several episodes of the first season hinted that the Moon's journey was influenced (and perhaps initiated) by a "mysterious unknown force", which was guiding the Alphans toward an ultimate destiny. What that destiny was would never be revealed, unfortunately.
In my opinion, the first season, the one Sylvia Anderson produced was the better one, because of the plot lines mentioned above. However, the show became a tragedy of the break-up of the Anderson's marriage.
For the second season, Gerry Anderson hired Fred Freiberger, who produced Star Trek's third season, to replace his estranged wife. Unfortnately, Freiberger didn't understand the concept of the show and turned it into a poor man's Star Trek (he even added an alien character, Maya, as Science Officer, probably figuring that if Gene Roddenberry could do it with Spock, Freiberger could do it with Maya).
The fans, however, were less than thrilled and deserted the show in droves. Space: 1999 would not receive a third season.
