I tend to divide this cartoon into two categories.
The first is the legend of Robin Hood and his Merry Men in outer space. Rocket Robin Hood and his men battled the evil Prince John and the Sheriff of N.O.T.T (National Outer Space Terrestrial Territories). These episodes were light and had a lot of comedy.
The second category is the one in which Rocket Robin Hood becomes a darker show. The comedy is replaced by more science fiction oriented plots. To this end, Prince John and the Sheriff, who were mostly played for laughs, were phased out, to be replaced by more menacing villians. Robin and his Merry Men tackled mad scientists, would be conquerors, and some weird aliens (Infanata, from Dementia Five comes to mind here).
Even their status as outlaws was changed in his point in the series. The episode Pearl Of Cosmo Khan, introduces the U.S.S. (United Solar Systems), an organization kind of like Star Trek's Federation. In this episode, the U.S.S. gives Robin and his men amnesty in return for carrying out a mission for them. From that point on, Robin and the Merry Men were often seen working alongside the U.S.S.
One episode had a character called Princess Leia, at least a decade before Star Wars came out.
I remember one episode: Young Mr. Ulysses
Rocket Robin and Little John discover the son of the historical Ulysses preserved in a substance on a volcanic asteroid that had been recently blown off the surface of Earth.
After managing to thaw said son out. His name is also Ulysses and he explains that he was looking for the Golden Fleece when a volcanic eruption trapped him. Somehow, he was covered with volcanic ash that put him in suspended animation, which he remained in for thousands of years until Robin and Little John freed him. They resume the search for the Golden Fleece.
Trouble is, the Cyclops and Medusa, who were guarding the Golden Fleece, were also preserved over the centuries the same way Ulysses was. The volcanic explosion that blew the fragment off Earth has also freed and revived them.
Towards the end, after eluding the Cyclops, they find the Golden Fleece. It's at this point that Medusa shows up and traps them. They cannot look at her face, without turning to stone. So Robin uses a bludgeon arrow to knock her unconscious.
The Cyclops then returns and a chase scene ensues. Rocket Robin Hood tricks the Cyclops into looking into Medusa's face just as she regains consciousness. Needless to say, the Cyclops gets turned to stone.
Ulysses, now possessing the Golden Fleece, is flown back to Earth by one of Robin's men.
RIIIIIIGHT!
-Ulysses has been sleeping for thousands of years, yet Robin and Little John act like he'll be okay on 30th Century Earth.
Imagine taking someone from Ancient Troy and plunking them down in modern New York City. They aren't going to adjust very well, so how will Ulysses do so?
-are the Cyclops and Medusa that stupid? They must have realized that eons had passed. Whatever reason they had for guarding the Golden Fleece surely no longer applied.
-why did Medusa turn Cyclops to stone (she seemed to have some control over it)? Weren't they on the same side?
-what happened to Medusa? After she turns the Cyclops to stone, Robin makes a joke about it and everything's fine. Did she just go away for some reason? Is she to be left alone on that asteroid with a stone Cyclops for company? Couldn't something have been worked out for her return to Earth as well (assuming Medusa is intelligent, it's hard to determine because she had no lines).
Yes, this show is in my DVD library.
