Dare I ask what mPreg is? I have some kind of idea but I'm shuddering at the thought.
I'd totally be open to including a female character into my ship, but tbh I can't really think of anybody who'd fit, they never really made use of the female Pokemon characters who weren't gym leaders/elite four members.

Yeah, the series hasn't been good to female player characters. Either they get erased from existence: bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Kris_(game)bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Leaf_(game)Or, relegated to fanservice for Horny Teenage Boys on the anime: bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/May_(anime)bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Dawn_(anime)bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Serena_(anime)Or, are simply ignored: bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Hilda_(game)bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Rosa_(game)bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Moon_(game)And, no trailer, adaptation, or special has ever portrayed the girl as the protagonist. If they're even acknowledged, being Ash's Contest Bimbo Girlfriend is usually the best they can hope for. No way in hell will they ever get to collect badges or become champions. Apparently, that's still a boys only thing.

Yeah, one thing I would love for the anime is for Ash to have a FEMALE rival, who is super tough and constantly is able to beat him a bit like Paul, absolutely thrashes him each time, it would just be so satisfying. And it might show the young boys watching the show that girls can be strong too, not to mention show young girls that they can play the games and be great trainers as well.

The anime could've easily done this with the female PCs it didn't use as traveling companions, like Kris during Johto, Green during Battle Frontier, or Hilda during Best Wishes. It's not like Ash had any real rivals in the Johto/AG/BW arcs, anyways. (No, I don't consider Trip to be a real rival, LOL.) Of course, it's hard not to notice a certain (depressing) trend with what female PCs get acknowledged by the anime. Notice that the three most neglected/screwed over ones had the most practical/tomboyish designs: Even the girlier (and also ignored) Rosa and Moon were still practically dressed: Compare this to two of the girls who *did* get to be in the anime: Aka, cutesy miniskirt outfits with loads of pink. Aka, girls you can easily stick in cutesy outfits and promote for fanservice: However, May did have a more practical/tomboyish design in the games: Aaaaand, she still got girlified/pinkified in the anime: Which, in turn, influenced her girlier ORAS redesign: Just, UGH. Could it be any more obvious how this show feels about female characters? They exist to wear cute outfits, play dress up in contests, and nothing else. Battling, heroism, and becoming Champion is for boys and only boys. Nice message there, show.

They dress them like Japanese pop idols, aka girly and very, very feminine, those types of idol groups from what I can tell exist to sell music by being cutesy girls, the music comes second, it seems to be the way they do things in Japan when it comes to entertainment. Something else that would be cool is if the female rival could be a color other than white, yes, I know Japanese people are usually pale and I get that's why they keep their skin color like that and its fine, but it would be cool to see a trainer come from overseas, perhaps a new region who is not the standard Pokemon girl. Dress her like ana ctual person as opposed to the usual "doll" attire.

Just because it's part of their culture doesn't make it right. Japan's pop idol industry is known for being horrifically sexist and abusive.Plus, you also have to remember that these girls (at least in the anime) are only supposed to be around 10-11 years old. These girls are barely into puberty, yet are running around in tiny miniskirts and being treated as fanservice for a presumed male audience. Even May was given an abnormally large chest and portrayed stripping her clothes off at the beach. Yet, the anime's producers swear up and down that the show's for little kids and only little kids. Something else that would be cool is if the female rival could be a color other than white, yes, I know Japanese people are usually pale and I get that's why they keep their skin color like that and its fine, but it would be cool to see a trainer come from overseas, perhaps a new region who is not the standard Pokemon girl. Dress her like an actual person as opposed to the usual "doll" attire. I agree. That actually would've been a good use for Iris instead of making her an annoying poor man's Misty.

Oh God don't get me started on Iris, probably my most hated Pokemon character of all time, pretentious, big-headed, annoying, eurgh, I loathe her. It would have been good for them to have given Ash a real rival in Unova, aside from a guy who beat his level 5000 Pikachu with a newly hatched Snivy.

Pretty picture. With Iris, they were obviously trying to give us another battle-oriented girl like Misty instead of yet another Contest Bimbo in the vein of May/Dawn. The intentions were good, but the execution was terrible, just like everything else in the BW arc. Iris lacked Misty's depth and came off as a very annoying, one-note character. (ie. "You're such a kid, Ash!" ) Unfortunately, it seems that the writers took the negative response to Iris to mean "fans don't want strong, battle-oriented female leads" instead of "fans don't want badly-written female leads," and they gave us the weakest, most useless female lead to date (Serena). Literally no goals besides looking pretty and getting Ash to notice her. Even May/Dawn look like badasses next to her.

Yeah I have no problem with them giving us a strong female, I have a problem with BADLY WRITTEN females, or just badly written characters in general, I don't know if it was just the dub that made Iris so annoying or if she was like that in the original Japanese as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if many of Iris' worst aspects actually came from the dub. IMO, the quality of the dub took a nosedive when TPCi took over from 4Kids back in 2006. While TPCi censored fewer things (ie. rice balls being called "jelly donuts" ), their dialog is far worse, and their VAs lack the talent of the original 4Kids VAs. For example, they hired a heavy smoker to voice Ash, making him sound like a teenager who smokes 5 packs a day instead of the 10 year old he's supposed to be.

Yes, I remember I used to watch Pokemon everyday on Cartoon Network after school, I remember it well because it was when the group returned to Kanto to compete in the Battle Frontier, one day it was fine, the next I Switched on the TV and thought I was watching a completely different show, the voices were totally different and it took me years to get used to it. Ash in particular just sounded the exact opposite of the original voice, it was so jarring.

Ash in particular just sounded the exact opposite of the original voice, it was so jarring. What happened was that TCPi was trying to cut costs (remember that this was when the franchise's popularity was at an all-time low, especially in the West -- the Hoenn arc saw a noticeable drop in ratings from Kanto/Orange/Johto), and they could no longer afford the 4Kids VAs, so they unceremoniously fired all of them and replaced them with cheaper, less experienced (and talented) substitutes. Even the 4Kids VAs themselves were unhappy: Maddie Blaustein: This message now reads extremely bittersweet and sad, as she later passed away in 2008. Eric Stuart: Veronica Taylor: Rachael Lillis: For better or worse, 4Kids' dub of the anime was what helped put Pokémon on the spot in the late 90s and early 00s, and the 4Kids VAs are who defined characters like Ash, Misty, Brock, and the TRio for an entire generation. These were seasoned professionals who dedicated themselves to giving a good performance and bringing these characters to life, and they were simply thrown away like they were nothing.

Couldn't afford them my ass, sure it had declined in popularity somewhat, but between 2002-2010 Pokemon still had some of the highest selling games ever released on handheld consoles and many kids still bought merchandise and the like, they clearly just didn't like spending their money on actual quality, something that has plagued the entire anime.

Yeah, the cheapification of the anime (both original and dub) had already begun even before the VA change. At the tail end of the Johto arc, they switched to computer-based animation, and it looked *noticeably* cheaper and crappier than the earlier hand-drawn animation. Just compare Ho-Oh's appearance in the first episode to its appearance in late Johto: Or, the TRio in earlier episodes vs later episodes: Jessie's hair actually used to be red and not bright violet/magenta! The anime fandom even made up a term for this animation -- "eyegarbage animation" -- and it certainly fits! The animation quality did start to improve somewhat around late DP/early BW (and then went straight back into the gutter with SM), but it still never matched the depth and richness of the earlier hand-drawn animation. Of course, it's probably no coincidence that the switch from hand-drawn to digital animation happened as OS ended and AG began. I've said it before, but Hoenn marked the beginning of the anime being a blatant advertisement for the games (vs a more subtle advertisement like Kanto/Orange/Johto were). Hoenn was when they started dumping old traveling companions in favor of ones who promote the newest games, and Hoenn was also when they started dumping all of Ash's previous Pokémon (except Pikachu) at the start of every region. Hoenn was also when the movies started to all have the same generic plot designed to showcase the newest Event Legendary.
