A Necessary Evil
After gaining Immortality. Callisto is back on Xena and trapped in the abandoned temple from her last appearance.
It should be noted that both shows had their highest ratings ever, I guess that can be in part to the major crossover appearances that went on for many weeks at this time across both shows.
The Amazons make Ephiny the queen but the ceremony is interrupted by Velesca. I forgot how big Melinda Clark got since Xena, and has made appearances on so many shows.
The CGI eyes must be of newly born gods. I don't recall Callisto having them when she returns in season 3. I liked that this episode gives Gabrielle a nemesis, it is always Xena. So this was a big change. Too bad Velesca never returned after this episode.
Funny the suggestion to get Hercules to stop Velesca was brought up. Considering Hercules had just given up his godhood on Hercules, before Xena and Gabrielle make an appearance in the crossover episode on Hercules not long after this episode.
I loved Callisto and Xena's first face-off, and Callisto doesn't hold back when she first encounters Gabrielle and digs deep into her previous murder of her husband.
Xena's Cirra confession at the town was a really good moment. Callisto is one to watch for her reactions, just filled with emptiness. The campfire scene between Callisto and Gabrielle is my favorite part of the episode. Everything was done so well by the actresses.
The fight at the end was less than epic, only because the Callisto and Velesca face-off wouldn't be followed up. I guess Hope only brought Callisto out of the pit and not Velesca. I loved the moment when Velesca watches Callisto reaching for the ambrosia in Gabrielle's hand and says to herself, She's got to go!
The end of the episode with Xena and Gabrielle was interesting. When Gabrielle believes that some part of Callisto is sorry for what she did. Xena's immediate response is no.
Note: If a mod can move any discussion this episode had from the general thread, that would be appreciated.
