I've watched the first five episodes in order. So I'm going to review these. Starting with the first episode, I was planning on doing the Xena trilogy, but I've misplaced my Hercules set.
Now the start of the episode I really love. We are assuming some time has passed since her last appearance on Hercules to this first episode. Her already has Argo, perhaps her Argo was her first friend after she left Hercules and she bonded with her.
I liked when she went to the village and the little boy starts talking about Xena.
Now, this is where I believe Xena was going to give up completely. If it wasn't for Gabrielle's village needing saving. I'd hate to think Xena was going to commit suicide or not. But a feeling I had. In the very beginning of this episode where she buried her weapons and wanted to live without fighting perhaps. Obviously, her past was tormenting her so much that she didn't want to raze her sword agian. This defintley wasn't the state that she was left in after "Unchained Heart" when she rode off with Hercules. So we have a whole backstory of what just happened between The Unchained Heart on Hercules and this first episode Sins of the Past. Perhaps she came into contact with so many people her hurt and the guilt was becoming too much.
It was clear from Gabrielle's very first appearance that she really does well speaking up to people. Trying to convince the warlords to let them all go. When Xena shows up to save them, I think this gave her the courage to really stand up to the warlords.
I can see Gabrielle idolizing Xena from the very beginning. Someone so strong and wanted to be just like her.
I liked how Xena's friendship with Gabrielle grew as the episode progressed, and by episode's end, they are on their travels together. You can tell Xena was having trouble letting people in, and when she did she started to grow. I've always wondered how the show would do if Xena was a lone traveler. I don't think the show or Xena would survive.
I liked Draco as the villain in this episode and loved Xena's reunion with her mother Cyrene. We learn a little bit more about her past through talking to her mother Cyrene with her defending her village and people dying in the process. We learn it was her young brother who died much later.
Ares is mentioned, and we all know he plays a much bigger role later on.
I loved this start to the series. The characters all worked well and the chemistry between Xena and Gabrielle and friendship is already great.
9.5 out of 10 Chakrams for my grading.
