Charmed Reboot Hired an Actual Witch for Its Writers Room

The CW’s Charmed reboot hasn’t won over the show’s original cast, but at least it’s got magic working in its favor. During a Television Critics Association panel on Monday, executive producers Jennie Snyder Urman, Jessica O’Toole, and Amy Rardin revealed that Charmed has an actual practitioner of witchcraft in its writers room: Marcos Luevanos, a writer and producer for the reboot, belongs to a real-life coven and was hired after a One Day at a Time staffer recommended him. “Our writers have been amazing,” O’Toole said. “They’re sending us spells they found, they’re watching exorcism and witchcraft movies

Hey, so maybe they'll get things about Wicca right in the reboot. 

You got the impression that the original series threw the term "Wicca" around, without really understanding it.  And, any Wiccans shown were either played for laughs or were Ensign Deadmeat characters.

With an actual witch on staff, hopefully this won't happen here.

As you can probably guess from his name, Marcos Luevanos is not just a witch, but a Latino witch. With the new Charmed Ones being Latina (and Macy being Afro-Latina), I hope that the show pulls less of its mythology from European Wicca and more from the pagan traditions of Latin America and the Caribbean:

Yeah, that is an added bonus.  It would make sense to draw from the ancestries of the main characters.

Maybe that's why they have different dads. I still find it weird they went for this.

I presume there is a chance the whitelighter Harry might be one of the dads.

As I said, I hope that this will help the show when it deals with Wicca.  It would be nice to see Wicca being taken seriously for a change.

If the reboot is going to use Wicca, then it needs to treat it with respect.  Not just for laughs, like the original series did (Marcy in Mrs. Hellfire, anyone).

This is very encouraging, the fact that they are actively trying to get the mythology behind witchcraft correct tells me this is a good sign.

Me too.  That means if they do an episode that centers around Wicca, it will be taken seriously.
