True.
The older fans of Eurovision prefer past times when there was no televoting or block country voting like Greece to Cyprus and vice versa along with a live orchestra and the fact you had to sing in your own language as well whilst newer generations prefer what is on now.
In terms of songs which aren't power ballads but one's that have been my favourites throughout the years and are regularly played out of the 304 songs I have in my folder are Making Your Mind Up (Bucks Fizz) the United Kingdom, Diva (Dana International) Israel, Euphoria (Loreen) Sweden, Heroes (Mans Zelmerlow) Sweden also, Warrior (Nina Subaltti) Georgia who in my opinion was the underrated winner in 2015, and finally Your The Only One and Scream (Sergey Lazarev) Russia 2016 and 2019.
Of course, who can forget Mr Eurovision Johnny Logan the only person to win the contest three times twice singing and the third with a song he wrote though bad music management didn't help his career afterwards hence why he's known only for Eurovision.
Being an ABBA fan mum's favourite is Waterloo of course which Jana I know will agree is a classic Eurovision song that still stands up even to now. Her second favourite and what she sings terrible to is Mans Zelmerlow's Heroes because of the upbeat tempo.

Some songs in the late 1990ies or 2000 are also good, I admit. Like Dana International "Diva" and others. But still the influence was more of the 1980ies. Naturally, ABBA remains my favorite of all time but Cliff Richard and Brotherhood of Man, along with Bucks Fizz. The ESC or Grand Prix earlier has already brought some good over the years existing.

Yep the other songs you mentioned Jana still resonate with Eurovision fans even now with older generation people.
Of course the UK were more appreciated then but we know we're better than Eurovision in terms of songwriters and bands.

I love Waterloo by ABBA! As far as other favorites, my tastes are really weird... but I really like Dancing Lasha Tumbai, by Verka Serduchka (Ukraine, 2007), Wolves of the Sea (Latvia, 2008), Lordi (2006, Finland- I remember the controversy when they won!), and Scream, by Sergey Lazarev (Russia 2019).

Or I guess I watched too many shows about the good ol' times which were aired from time to time, even though only on Youtube.

Lordi were fun also yes.
I guess for me I like people with big or angelic voices hence why folks like Dami Im and Eimer Quinn appealed to me and why Gjon's Tears was my winner this year.
Of course we can't forget Celine Dion one of my all time favourite female vocalists who sang and won Eurovision for Switzerland in 1988 singing in French which started her career.
I remember when everyone heard her sing the first time they were like who is this? Definately a WTF moment the same with Gjon's Tears.
He probably would've been my winner last year had the contest gone ahead but I know the show isn't just about the voice and the fact I think it was the wrong year for Gjon to win because people favoured a more happy upbeat song instead with everything that's happened already.
I'm sure Gjon will go far if he's signed to a record label like Destiny from Malta has with Sony music and I'll certainly look out for anymore music he does future wise then.

French Canadian yes but because she won the Swiss national finals and speaks the lingo Celine was able to represent Switzerland in 1988 as there are no rules stating you have to be from that country to participate then the same with Katrina from Katrina And The Waves who is American but represented the UK in 97 the same as Gina G also obviously.

Yep, goes for many singers. Many who started for Germany in the 1950ies or 1960ies came from Norway or Sweden originally but sang German. So, nothing new then with Celine Dion.

Uh, okay then.

It was important back then to sing in the original country language, hence French, German and so on. So, Celine Dion was allowed to.

And that's why Ireland and the UK done better before the rule change in 98 which made it harder then and the fact neither country was going ahead with the times and sending certain styled songs people liked at the time which countries like Sweden and Denmark did making them forces to be reckoned with in the 200's then.

Yep, we've got more performances than the concentration on the song. Only a few exceptions are to mention here, like the winner from Spain in 2018, I think. I forgot his name!
