Eurovision Song Contest is an annual televised song contest that started off in 1956. It is usually televised in the public TV networks of the participating nations, as well as non-participating nations (which usually televise the contest in privately-owned TV networks). Acts such as Johnny Logan, Katrina and the Waves and Céline Dion became well known by the way of participating in this song contest. "Nocturne" by Secret Garden which was Norway's winning entry in 1995 also gained worldwide popularity - for one thing, it was used during the opening sequence of the first "Shrek" movie.
The song contest has also become famous for joke entries like "Dancing Lasha Tumbai" (Ukraine 2008) which were the product of the televote-only system practiced from 2003-2008. Ever since Eurovision adapted the 50-50 system (50% jury votes and 50% televotes), there had been a decrease of joke entries, with Montenegro's 2012 entry being the most recent one.
This thread has been created for those who want to discuss the Eurovision. Enjoy!

My mum and I watch Eurovision each year and remember all the acts victoriaalix previously mentioned.
They've been some good songs over the years and some downright shocking ones but that's Eurovision of course.
I probably liked the contest back when it was about the song and not the performance as a whole when judges voted not people and no block voting occurred been the '90s or before which isn't because the UK last won 1997 or the winning record Ireland achieved also.
Eurovision's cited for introducing Riverdance which took the world by storm that's noted being the best half time performance still which my mum and I saw in theatre on their 20th anniversary been one of the our favourite shows we've watched.

I do watch the ESC as well when I can. After all, ABBA made a great career out of their Eurovision victory from 1974. And as mentioned, many todays big stars started at the ESC small like Celine Dion. Even some of our German entries were good.

Hey, Celine Dion, a Canadian. I remember when she first appeared on the scene, decades ago.

In terms of song quality (and yes, even vocal quality) - the 90s and the preceding decades had better entries. Even Germany's 1979 entry which was considered by some to be a joke entry was considered to be a serious entry compared to most of the joke entries after the 90s.

According to Jana, even East Germany entered. I didn't think that was allowed.

I don't mind the UK hasn't won since 1997 because I know we won't each year because we just send generic songs of course.
If that was to change we'd need to look at what European countries like Sweden, Russia, Denmark or Azerbaijan did in recent years and follow their examples perhaps.

Entries from countries that are not even in Europe. Nice that they're open to that.

According to Jana, even East Germany entered. I didn't think that was allowed. From what I know, they tried to enter. Even the Soviet Union considered joining Eurovision during the Gorbachev era. The only socialist state to actually compete in the contest was Yugoslavia which won once a few years before it dissolved.

Well, Yugoslavia had been out of the Soviet orbit since Tito severed ties.

No, the Eastern side didn't enter - only afterwards when the wall came down. What I meant was the Western side of Germany and they had good songs, like Nicole and "A little peace". We could watch it from the GDR naturally.

Guess it was too close to be jammed.

Here is a video of what could've been the first semi-final of this year's contest in Rotterdam with the songs in running order of how they would've appeared on the show plus 2 of the big five countries Italy and Germany which I thought was a good line up with only 3 out of the 19 songs sung I didn't enjoy. www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNk7fAqYLiwThey will post the next video of the second semi-final which would've been this evening then have a celebration Saturday via the BBC on what would've been grand final day going over the songs plus past Eurovision participates recreating their songs like a few years ago for the 60th anniversary.

This is the second video from the last semi-final which would've taken place last night featuring the remaining songs plus Spain and UK's entries being the final 2 of the big 5 counties who go straight into the Saturday show normally. www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4A6hstelW0The same as Tuesday I enjoyed most of the 21 songs shown with 4 out of them I didn't like then.
