Yeah, but what about people born in 1995 or after? Would they know who they are (without consulting Wikipedia, of course).

This article isn't explicitly about MTV, but the death of alternative rock in the late 90s was a major impetus for MTV's decline. Highly recommended read:If you find yourself seeing parallels to Orange Hitler and the MAGA cult in nu metal's brief rise to fame, that's not an accident. Many of those same 13 year old white boys who loved Korn and Bizkit back in 1998 later went on to cast votes for neo-fascism in 2016.Nu metal was all about exploiting suburban white boy rage and "reclaiming" rock music for the bros after grunge and alternative had made it a more inclusive place for women and queer people. It was music for privileged assholes who felt "oppressed" by progress and the thought of losing their white male privilege. Nu metal was the final nail in the coffin for MTV's relevance. It was the death of the 90s.

I’ll admit I liked a few Korn songs back in high school but overall nu Metal and the late 90s in general was not a good time for music. I hated Britney and *NSYNC and those crappy boy bands, hated most nu Metal and rap. It seemed as though music went down the tubes very quickly after the alternative bands and music wasn’t as popular. And yes, a lot of the guys who listened to nu Metal and rap were douchebags🤬

I have one Limp Bizkit record and that was 'Rollin' or whatever it was called. I forgot.

I've never even heard of this Korn. They were hugely popular in the late 90s, I suppose to you didn’t listen to rock radio or watch MTV. That kind of Metal was very popular with angry white boys, not as much up here in New Jersey but it was quite popular in central Florida where Dad’s family lives. It was not only loud but dumb, anger for the sake of being angry. The same guys who listened to this crap also loved rap, it was common in Florida to see these assholes blasting this crappy music from car stereos loud enough to rouse the dead. So yeah, the late 90s and early 2000s sucked ass music wise.

I have one Limp Bizkit record and that was 'Rollin' or whatever it was called. I forgot. Rollin was notable because it was filmed at the Twin Towers before 9/11, which was the only good thing about that dumb song. Limp Bizkit sucked so bad, normal metal heads can’t stand them. At least 80s hair Metal was fun party music, nu Metal is just loud and depressing.

I was in my early 30's by then. Well over the average MTV watcher's age.

To be fair, MAGA hats didn’t exist in the late 90s. But nu Metal sucked, when it comes to Metal I prefer older Metallica, the British groups like Iron Maiden or Scandinavian bands like Children of Bodom. People complained about hair metal in the 80s but that was just party music, not angry douchebag music.

The red cap has been a symbol of white douchebaggery for over 20 years and counting. I've never been into metal/hard rock, in general, but nu metal is objectively shit music. And, leaning all in on that crap instead of the far better Britpop and low-fi/indie scenes was a critical mistake on MTV's part. It indicated that they no longer had a finger on the pulse of music's future like they had back in the late 80s and early 90s. If I had to pinpoint a specific turning point, it was probably 1998. That was the year TRL started, and that show ensured that 95% of the music the network played was only the most marketing-friendly slop. Say hello to not just nu metal, but also prefab teen pop and bling bling rap. Dark times.

I remember those red Yankee hats, I wear a proper blue one since I am a real Yankees fan But you’re right about TRL, the few times I watched it they had the worst music and screaming kids. I liked Oasis back in the day and it’s a shame they didn’t become more popular in the USA, Noel Gallagher is a brilliant songwriter. I don’t think nu Metal required much talent since the vocals were mostly grunting and rapping plus the guitars were so detuned and distorted it just made a lot of noise. Thankfully it died out, the only one of those guys who’s still around is Kid Rock and he had the sense to make country music after rap rock went out of style.

I did read that article and Ughhhh! Limp Bizkit’s version of Faith was just evil and Fred Durst is probably one of the biggest douchebags in music. I agree with the review of the Korn concert, their music is tolerable on a CD player at a reasonable volume but that concert sounded like aural torture. Plus their fans sound like jerks, and that All in the Family song sounds like one of Eminem’s more tasteless songs. I’m glad nu Metal died out.
