Betty and Adam, you two are now living in a world very different than the one you both grew up in. You two never knew a world in which Russia was an enemy, and the threat of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) was a fact. By the time both of you were born (1991 and 1992), it was though that world was gone for good.
Now it's back.
However, Jana and I grew up in that world, heck Jana spend the first twelve years of her life in a country under Communist rule (East Germany). For the two of us, seeing this world rise from the grave brings back old fears that World War III is a real possibility.
Granted, there are differences, namely it's not Capitalism VS Communism this time, but the two key players are the same (U.S. and Russia). And we have China waiting in the wings this time as well.
We're two decades into the 21st Century, but now it feels like the 20th is back with us.

It is frightening Tim, especially since me and Jana are in the same continent this is happening in. Putin is absolutely insane and cannot come back from this.
What I find most strange is that we can now see this happening in real time, there are livestreams and broadcasts of this happening right in front of our eyes, it puts things into perspective that's for sure.
Sanctions have been imposed but Putin doesn't seem to care, he'll get what he wants eventually - Ukraine, and if the world lets him get away with it, then who is next? But its not like anyone wants nuclear war, so I can see why our leaders are having trouble deciding on what to do.

Many have said this was like if the Second World War had been live-streamed.
The problem is that we can't make the same mistake Neville Chamberlain made in 1938 with Hitler. Appeasement never works with bullies like that.
Of course, perhaps the Russian people will do what the Serbs did in 2000. After the Balkan Wars that their leader Slobodan Milošević kept getting them into, back in the 1990's, they rose up and ousted him.
Putin does have enemies, and if the war goes badly for him, they might finally move against him.

It's scary and frightening. I feel with the Ukrainian people, and yeah, Tim and I know this world already by growing up. I've seen several documentaries about Putin and it really seems that he wants the Soviet Union back, on his terms. This conflict has been growing since Putin took "Crimea", and now the man wants to make new "frontiers" and Belarus is helping.
I just hope we really don't end in a WW III. Sanctions might be a way but that didn't help before. The NATO has to act as an union.

Some think that Putin will install a puppet leader in Ukraine and call it a day. That will be the only way he can stop and not lose face.
Sadly, that means Ukraine might become like Bosnia was in the 90's.

I was already asked in 2014 why the Ukraine might be that way, torn into two parts. The Eastern part drawn to Russia and the Western one to Europe. Explain later if wanted.

I also feel for the Ukrainian population and think Putin's a mad dictator who should be ousted.
I saw a short video on Imgur from a young Ukrainian woman telling how she lost her mother after Russian soldiers fired upon them when leaving their house which shocked me of course.
The woman hid an hour and a half before the soldiers left and found her mother gone once she came out.
If nothing's done then things like that will continue on. If this ever ends the president should be held for war crimes like the Nazis soldiers from world war two.

And SpnFanJackie and Melinda Halliwell . It's so scary. This invasion is just so scary, than any terror attack I've seen before. There's no coming back from this for Putin. 2020 truly has been been s**t from the get go. Its been nothing but a disaster after the other with something going on from a pandemic, floods, wildfires and now this attack on Ukraine.

I was born in the late 70s. So I grew up in that world to remember it.

Indeed he should. That's what happened to the aforementioned Slobodan Milošević. The Serbs handed him over to the International Court in The Hague, where he stood trial for starting the Balkan Wars.
Of course, the trick would be capturing Putin. The only way that could happen is that the Russians depose him (not all of Russia is behind him) and hand him over themselves.

But I'm the only one present to remember living IN a communist country. Never mind, after the wall came down, we all thought Russia would be different, yet when Putin came to power, during my study, I could already say good bye to my dreams. It was back then a back step, and not forward.
As Putin being a man of the old KGB, he certainly held a long strategy and now it pays off, it seems. Too bad, innocent people have to suffer.

Seems that it's more than just the USSR.
Putin seems to be dreaming of re-creating the Russian Empire that existed prior to the First World War. And I'm guessing that he wants to be a 21st Century Tsar. And now he risks it all to achieve that mad dream.

The news coming out of Ukraine is crazy, the Russian army is attacking hospitals and apartment buildings and don’t care they’re killing civilians. Much of the Russian army are drunks, drug addicts, and the lowest types in society, people who have no other option in life. On the other hand, Ukrainians are fighting for their country and there’s videos of civilians of all ages and walks of life armed and fighting, including the elderly and teenagers.
Plus President Zelensky is a badass, he could have fled the country but is staying behind with his people and authorizing all citizens to fight the Russians. He knows that if the Russians find him, they’ll kill him and his family but they’re staying put with their people and not fleeing. This is leadership and the Ukrainian people are very brave, there’s old people with AK-47s fighting the Russian army

Yeah, who would have thought this. In a way, Russian and Ukrainians are "brothers", yet different in cultures. I hope there's a chance for peace still.

That is the difference. The Russian soldiers have no real investment, they're just in it for the money.
The Ukrainians are, as you said, Vanessa, fighting for their homeland. And I can see them, if necessary, becoming a 21st Century French Resistance
I know, right. He's basically saying: "Go ahead, Vlad, make my day!"
He reminds me of Winston Churchill.
