Good old Dailymotion comes through again.
Perhaps I will, just to see what all the fuss was about.
I believe they tried to revive B&B a few years back.

I've already linked to this article, but here it is again. MTV and Mike Judge briefly revived the show in 2011, riding a wave of 90s nostalgia and fan demand. The new season was actually well-received and got strong ratings at first, but it failed to expand its audience beyond nostalgic old fans, so ratings quickly collapsed. (I think many older fans were also alienated by them reviewing shit like Jersey Shore/Teen Mom instead of music videos.) Last year, Mike Judge did kick around the idea of doing a new movie with the two idiots, so it may not be all over just yet. TBH, I actually liked the 2011 revival, so I'm cautiously optimistic about a new movie. Beavis & Butthead seems to be one of the few shows where these kinds of revivals can actually work. Hopefully, this movie doesn't end up being a casualty of COVID.

And I can see why that happened. Anyone born after 1995 would probably have no idea who Beavis and Butthead are.
It was pure nostalgia, and once the novelty of that wore off, that's all she wrote.

Dammit! news.avclub.com/comedy-central-nabs-daria-spin-off-jodie-starring-trace-1844087360I thought COVID might've killed this unnecessary, fake-woke mess, but I guess the recent protests "revived" it. Great. Like, why can't we just have a NEW show inspired by Daria that stars a Black girl? Why does a show that ended very badly need to be revived from the dead? This is just gonna be a continuation of the shit we got in Seasons 4-5, count on it. Hard pass.

There is no originality left in Hollywood. Of course, they're gonna dig up a show that died years ago.

There is no originality left in Hollywood. Of course, they're gonna dig up a show that died years ago. And, even worse, it's another example of hand-me-down representation. Although it's not technically a racebent reboot, it still comes from the same mindset. Jodie was always a side character, and MTV wants to look "woke" while they're digging up Daria from the grave, so why not shove her to the forefront out of nowhere? Then, they can evade criticism of the show being yet another recycled property by saying "you just don't want a show about a Black girl," while simultaneously going "guess we shouldn't make shows starring Black characters" when it inevitably bombs in the ratings. Basically, the same shit the CW pulled with the Charmed reboot. It's a lose-lose for everyone.

Clearly MTV has no faith in this new show standing on its own, so they have to link it to a popular franchise. They're hoping that the Daria fans will come in and watch it, because it's connected to a popular character they loved.
Of course, once the Daria fans see this show for what it is, an attempt to cash in on a beloved fandom, they'll desert it in droves.

Here we go again, same old, same old with Hollywood. It's so bad for diversity and people of colour, if they continue to use popular franchises for diversity and slap a label on it.
I'm just so over this same old crap. People of colour deserve better, and something original.

There's a problem with that, though. Most Daria fans don't care about Jodie. They want Daria, Jane, and Trent. Those were the characters people connected with and cared the most about, and the shift away from them (especially the Lane siblings) in favor of new characters like Tom is exactly why most fans hate the last two seasons. What makes it even worse is that Jane and Trent were portrayed as racially ambiguous, so they may not even be white themselves. (I personally see them as Middle Eastern.) There were also hints towards them being bisexual (possibly a closeted lesbian, in Jane's case), as well. They could've simply turned subtext into actual text, and we would've had queer POC representation right there in the main cast. But, no, lets just throw all of that potential away for a side character few fans care about because it makes MTV look "hip" with the times.

And, I bet a lot of other people would as well. Plus, a new show actually has a chance with the teen/20-something audience, while a reboot/spinoff has no audience besides 30/40-somethings who grew up with the original.

I couldn't agree more with what you guys all say. It makes no sense when they want to target a newer generation, as most wouldn't have seen Daria unless it was streaming.
These new Hollywood writers really ain't trying hard to make a buck. And streaming has killed any creative juices in Hollywood.

The Beavis & Butthead revival was 10 years earlier and actually starred its main characters, and it STILL flopped in the ratings due to not bringing in any new audiences. How can anyone expect a random spinoff about an unpopular side character to do any better than that? What appeal does The Jodie Show have to anyone besides a subset of Black female Daria fans between the ages of 30 and 45? This isn't just a cash-grab. It's a bad cash-grab. There's no rhyme or reason besides "we need another 'diverse' reboot of an old property." Also very transparent that MTV is only giving this the greenlight because of BLM and the George Floyd protests, which is kinda tasteless. This show had been dead in the water up until then.

As I said, no one born after 1995 probably had any idea who these characters are. Thus they had no emotional investment.
Same problem. No one in MTV's core audience (late teens to early 20's) will have any idea who this character is. The fact that this isn't even a lead character only makes the problem worse. How are they going to sell this idea?
MTV should be ashamed of themselves.

People born before 1995 were still in their early 20s and thus, part of MTV's audience in 2011. A revival of a 90s show still had some viability then, and yet it still flopped. Now, add 10 years to that, make it a spinoff of a show that was always less popular/lower-rated than B&B, and make the star a side character nobody cares about (and wouldn't even be getting a spinoff if it wasn't for the color of her skin). It's a ratings disaster waiting to happen.

This is why I’m glad I don’t have cable, this Daria remake does sound like a cynical cash grab in order to look “woke”. I barely remember the show and most younger people wouldn’t have much of an idea about the original Daria, so I’m not sure what the target demographic is supposed to be. It’s going to flop, there’s no point for this show except to look woke.
