I’m working as a substitute teacher in Hudson and Bergen Counties in New Jersey to get experience working with older students and raise money to pay for my Praxis Licensing tests and student teaching. The first week was at a middle school, Wednesday and Thursday were half days with Friday being a full day. All three days were kids who didn’t have schedules and had to go to the office to find out where they needed to go, but otherwise nothing weird.
The last two days I was at Hackensack High School and I was surprised that there doesn’t seem to be a dress code, a lot of girls wore tight very brief shorts and bikini tops and had weird dyed hair, many of the boys had saggy pants and wore sandals with socks and had weird piercings. I went to high school in the 90s and kids got into trouble for wearing stuff like that. Tim, you went to high school in the 80’s, did you ever see girls dress that skimpy or boys that sloppy? 😳

Can't really remember, Vanessa.
It's been 40 years since high school for me.

I was just shocked because I went to high school in the late 90s and girls weren’t allowed to dress like that, we didn’t have uniforms but there was a dress code. I guess the school just wanted kids to show up so they didn’t care what they wore. Plus the kids were enormous, I’m five feet tall and these kids were much taller than me and many of the girls were very well developed compared to myself at that age, in high school I was skinny and flat chested.
This week was mostly uneventful but Wednesday was nuts. At the school there was a professional development day for the teachers so each class was supposed to have a substitute teacher, but there weren’t enough substitute teachers so many of the classes had to be combined. I ended up with 40+ kids and no other adults in the class, that’s supposed to be illegal because it exceeds the student teacher ratio. Luckily nobody got hurt, the school should have been closed for the day and the teachers could have sent home schoolwork

I could never be a teacher.
I find that, as I get older, my patience with children as gotten smaller.

Yeah honestly I have so much respect for teachers and substitute teachers - I don't know how they do it, the massive workload and having to deal with hormonal kids all day, it would drive me crazy!

Thanks Tim and Adam, I loved school growing up and wanted to be a teacher since I was a kid, it can be challenging but rewarding. Since there’s a teacher shortage in New Jersey, there’s lots of openings and gigs so I can work five days a week. I’m actually fully booked for the next three weeks and only have to find a few jobs in October, in November I work the whole month at a middle school. I want to get more experience with older students because I eventually want to teach middle or high school, I got tired of preschool

Teacher was my first dream job. Had a very good class teacher (back in GDR time) and she impressed me. However, I didn't study for it but sometimes I'm tempted to think about it again. With my skills, and besides, I've been teaching some time though. For newbies on rowing, and now women on biking.

Teaching can be rewarding and hard, but I loved school and like working with young people so it’s something I enjoy. Today was my first day teaching Sunday school at my church this year, today was mostly getting to know the students and reminding their parents to fill out the emergency contact form. Tomorrow I’m working at a middle school in Lodi, NJ. I’ve never been to this school before and I’m curious how it’s going to be

Today was fairly easygoing, I subbed in an English cat a middle school in Lodi. I’d never been to this school before but I used Google Maps and my bus pass without a problem. The kids already had their work on Google Classroom so I was there to supervise them, they have an adult in the classroom by law. Tomorrow I’m subbing as an art teacher at a high school in Bogota, those are nice easygoing classes

Sorry, I meant to say class😂 But seriously, I eventually want to work with older kids so I’m taking substitute teaching gigs at middle and high schools, I want to do the Praxis exam to teach middle or high school English and History so I want to get some experience. The art class today went well, the kids worked on their art projects. It certainly went better than last week’s art class where the kids threw crayons and fought, that sucked
