DESCRIPTION:
(from The CW's press release, May 2019) Nancy Drew (Kennedy McMann) is a brilliant teenaged detective whose sense of self had come from solving mysteries in her hometown of Horseshoe Bay, Maine - until her mother's untimely death derails Nancy's college plans. Devastated by her mother's passing, Nancy swears off crime-solving while crossing off the days until she can re-apply to college. But when a socialite is murdered, Nancy finds herself a prime suspect in the crime, along with a group of other teens present at the scene: Nancy's nemesis from high school, George Fan (Leah Lewis); a rich girl with a mysterious past, Bess Marvin (Maddison Jaizani); Nancy's secret boyfriend, Ned "Nick" Nickerson (Tunji Kasim), and amiable burnout Ace (Alex Saxon). The five of them must team up to clear their own names - encountering emotional entanglements and even more mysteries along the way. Nancy's reawakening brings her into conflict with her widowed father, Carson Drew (Scott Wolf), who is dating Detective Karen Hart (Alvina August). And, when a supernatural presence begins to haunt Nancy's investigation, she discovers that the current crime has an astonishing connection to the unsolved murder of a local girl. Whether the ghost is here to help, or hinder Nancy remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure: Nancy's going to have to unravel the clues from both the living and the dead to solve the crimes. Executive produced by Noga Landau ("The Magicians"), Melinda Hsu Taylor ("The Gifted"), Josh Schwartz ("Runaways"), Lis Rowinski ("Runaways"), NANCY DREW is a production of CBS Television Studios in association with Fake Empire. PRINCIPAL CAST INFORMATION:
· Kennedy McMann as Nancy Drew · Alvina August as Karen Hart · Alex Saxon as Ace · Leah Lewis as George Fan · Maddison Jaizani as Bess Marvin · Riley Smith as Ryan Hudson · Scott Wolf as Carson Drew · Tunji Kasim as Ned "Nick" Nickerson

I'm not sure how I feel about this: on the one hand, I'm a huge Nancy Drew fan, so a part of me is definitely excited for this, but on the other hand there are so many ways this could go wrong... For one thing I don't like some of the changes: they changed the town's original name (Nancy is originally from River Heights), Georges and Bess aren't her best friends (George is her "enemy" here, but maybe that'll change), and Ned seems to be her secret boyfriend? Why? Her mother just died, which means a lot of drama and angst that I'm not sure I'd be interested in (I'm tired of books or movies in which the parent has just recently died, it's never handled properly). So we'll just have to wait and see.

Is Nancy's mother alive in the books? I know her dad is.
One of the listed guests is Pamela Sue Martin, who played Nancy back in the 1970's.

In the books, she dies when Nancy is three (there are other versions in which Nancy is ten when her mother dies)... So, long before Nancy becomes a detective.

So I try to go in with the mind-set that it is its own thing.
I wonder if the name was changed due to rights?
Yeah, the killing of the parents is a CW typical plotline, I mean I've found so many shows basically have to wipe out the parents or make them corrupt or evil for drama. Half the time it is rarely handled well, and really is just for drama. I barely even see some shows giving characters two decent parents (both alive and even together) these days. Why is that? I can't remember the last show, where we had characters having parents who are just normal and both not divorced and or one is dead LOL

The original Nancy Drew books were written decades ago.
Clearly, the character and setting will have to be updated for modern audiences. That's true, it can't stick exactly to the old books. Changes are expected for a modern audience. This looks good, and I might check it out.

Yeah, I can't see Nancy screaming and fainting, like she did in the original novels.
Such outdated concepts for female characters would not fly today.

Nancy doesn't actually scream or faint much in the novels, unless she's being knocked out... Although it's interesting that in the original books from the 30's, Nancy was tougher, sassier and a bit more blunt, but that was changed in the 50's when she became more demure, polite, docile still, Nancy's always been strong, in any version, never weak or passive.
I just hope they don't add too much drama, too much teenage angst, because that's never what Nancy Drew was about. It should first and foremost be about the mysteries. I'm not saying she can't have more going on in her life, have more interests, but I don't want to see her caught up in love triangles, whine about her life, get caught up in unnecessary drama... I hope I'm making sense.

In short, Jennifer, you don't want to see her turn into later seasons Piper Halliwell!
But yeah, I agree. The mysteries should come first. Let Nancy have friends that she hangs out with, and a boyfriend or two, but leave it at that.

I've read some Nancy Drew books, at least 20 years ago. It is nice they are doing it. But my fears of The CW shows, it will include love triangles and teenage drama.
The mysteries and cases should be a big focus, with building a story-arc. I'm sure they might have a season-long mystery, with your mysteries of the week stories.

Kind of like Veronica Mars.
As I said, I might give this show a look when it starts. The only recent Nancy Drew project I've seen is the 2007 Emma Roberts movie.

Exactly like that show, which I have seen. I'm going to give this show a go.

I checked Wikipedia and this is what I found. Other failed attempts

Wow, Nancy has not had the best of luck getting on TV, has she.
Mind you, a few of these failed attempts really changed the premise, making Nancy a middle aged woman, instead of a teenager, so many that was one contributing factor. They strayed WAY too far from the original premise and the fans didn't like it.
Let's hope this version has better luck than those others did.

I hope they finally got it right. Looks like this has been ongoing for a long time. Like the Charmed reboot got three times.
I didn't even know they had a failed one season series in the 90s. LOL
